XMPP stands for Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol and was developed by the Jabber open-source community in 1999. Google Talk is one of the most popular XMPP based instant messaging clients. Google Wave’s federation protocol is an open extension to XMPP.

Recently, the Facebook Chat client was spotted by IMtrend’s bot. This indicates that Facebook has already deployed the XMPP software stack on chat.facebook.com. The malware in question is a trojan horse called Bredolab. This trojan injects itself into the explorer.exe process and runs the svchost.exe process. Bredolab itself doesn’t cause any further damage. However, it quietly operates in the background and downloads additional payloads (which can be rogue antispyware software or other malware) without your permission.

While it is common knowledge that one should never download attachments received from unknown sources, many users may still fall for this scam. Irrespective how authentic an e-mail appears, if it asks you to download an attachment something is bound to be fishy. Facebook will never send your password as attachments. And if you didn’t reset your password, then you shouldn’t be receiving a password reset email. Spread the message and prevent your friends and family from becoming victims.

The biggest change is the addition of Top Stories. Until now Facebook only displayed the most recent news feeds on the home page. However, in the redesigned version you will also be presented with the option to view the top news feeds. The Top News section will contain the most interesting updates as determined by an algorithm.

There are numerous other changes in the new home page. The publisher box is now hidden by default and has been replaced with an Update Status button. Facebook has also listened to user complaints and will be bringing back many items lost in the March update. Friend acceptances, relationships, event RSVPs and group memberships will now be featured in the news feed. Facebook page related activities (such as friends becoming a fan of a Page and virtual gifts) will also be included on the home page.

PrettySlide is a web application that lets you create slideshows of your Facebook albums. No need to register or sign-up, simple login with Facebook Connect and choose which album you want to create a slideshow of. You can choose from 5 different slideshow themes including Basic Viewer, Simple Viewer, PostCard Viewer, Flow Viewer and Carousal Viewer.

After you have created a slideshow, PrettySlide provides you with a permanent URL that you can use to share the slideshow with others. You can also change the style of a slideshow once you have created it. Overall, PrettySlide is a good application but it can be made even better if they could allow users to create a slideshow from only certain photos rather than the whole album.

SocialSafe is a new web service with a solution to this problem. For a little price ($2.99), they back up all your Facebook data and store it on your local machine so you can also browse it while you are offline. It is a neat idea and one that would definitely come in handy for people who spend countless hours on Facebook.

Currently, SocialSafe only supports Facebook but they promise coverage for more networks in the future. One big feature that I think they are missing is the ability to backup all this data in the cloud because a hard drive crash is probably more common than an accidental account deletion on Facebook. Stumble Upon gives users a sub-domain on their website, Twitter has been giving users a folder, Linked In has been doing the same for ages, Tumblr has a sub-domain and even allows users to use their own domain name, Posterous does the same as Tumblr, Flickr has it, Digg has it, Friendfeed has it, Last.fm has it, TwitPic has it, MySpace has it, Google has it, for that matter even Alltop has has that feature for so long now.

So what’s the big deal about Facebook having it? For us nothing more than another nuisance where people can find you easily using search engines.

However there is a way in which you can go back to a older layout in Facebook, however this option is only available for Firefox with the Greasemonkey add-on installed.

The Unfuck Facebook Greasemonkey userscript, will bring back the old two pane layout to Facebook, the script has been recently updated to incorporate the latest changes made by Facebook.

Once you have installed the script, refresh Facebook to see the changes, definitely useful for people who voted nay for the new Facebook design.

You will need to install Greasemonkey add-on before you can run this script.

The new Facebook polls have startling numbers against the new design, 94% of the people polled said that they did not like the new Facebook design.

Out of the 775946 people who took this poll only 44904 people said that they liked the new design, ouch that’s almost 95% people telling Facebook to shove the new design. Though that solution may not be entirely neat and may require multiple actions, Acrobat.com today announced a free add-in for Microsoft Outlook that will allow you to send large files from Outlook. This feature is pretty similar to the Yousendit add-in we had told you about earlier.

Once you have installed the Acrobat.com add-in on your computer, you can send large files by uploading them to your Acrobat.com account, which provides users with 5GB of free space.

To upload files to Acrobat.com and include a link to it in the email, click on the Acrobat.com tab in outlook and sing-in to your Acrobat.com account.

Once you have successfully signed in to your Acrobat.com account, you can upload files and insert links into the email.

You can also insert links from files that already exist in your Acrobat.com account.

Once you have uploaded or inserted the attachments into the email, the Acrobat.com add-in will add the links to the files into the email.

Clicking on the links inside the email, will allow users to download the attachments from Acrobat.com, thus allowing you to attach files up-to 5GB in a single email.

However like everything else, Acrobat.com’s add-in has a big problem, it does not allow users to attach MP3 and video files, which may be due to privacy concerns they have for sharing licensed content through their service.

Overall, the Acrobat.com add-in can come in pretty handy to workaround the 20MB attachment size, email providers have in place, but alas for the MP3 and video restrictions, this could have been the best way to send large attachments from Outlook.
