Photosynth | A cool Application for photo Enthusiasts

Microsoft Live Labs has recently launched a new service for photo enthusiasts, which can create magic of visiting the place actually, if you upload your photographs in PhotoSynth. See it to believe it. It has the ability to re-create the scene or object from a bunch of flat 2D photographs. It analyzes them and looks for the similar scenes and angles to create the magic.

How does it work?

Photosynth is a potent mixture of two independent breakthroughs: the ability to reconstruct the scene or object from a bunch of flat photographs, and the technology to bring that experience to virtually anyone over the Internet.

Using techniques from the field of computer vision, Photosynth examines images for similarities to each other and uses that information to estimate the shape of the subject and the vantage point each photo was taken from. With this information, we recreate the space and use it as a canvas to display and navigate through the photos. Photosynth was inspired by the breakthrough research on Photo Tourism from the University of Washington and Microsoft Research. This work pioneered the use of photogrammetry to power a cinematic and immersive experience

If you take lots of photos of a single object or scene from different locations and perspectives, then this is an ideal application for you. The application installs two programs: a browser plug-in for you to be able to view synths and the Photosynth application itself for you to create and manage synths.

FEBE | Firefox Extension to Backup and Synchronize your Firefox Profile on different PCs

Today Firefox is the preferred browser for the millions of “informed” netizens. What makes it to be the most popular among them is the availability of Firefox Extensions developed by third parties, which integrate seamlessly with your Firefox to personalize it as per your needs and requirements.

1 One such Firefox Extension is FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension), which allows you to backup your complete Firefox Profile, including all of your Firefox extensions, themes, and (optionally) your bookmarks, preferences, passwords, cookies and just about everything else Firefox offers.

There are many such utilities, which allows you to backup and restore your firefox profile. But most of them do that on the same PC. FEBE goes beyond just backing up. It actually rebuild your extensions individually into installable .xpi files and then makes a backup. What this means is that you can take this backup on a Flash Drive, take it to an other PC, and restore their. Your Firefox Profile on first PC will get duplicated onto the second PC. Thus you can easily synchronize your office and home browsers.

Version 5.0 allows for user-defined backups. Single files or entire directories can be specified to back up data for programs like Thunderbird, Greasemonkey, etc.

Backups can be performed on demand or scheduled for daily, weekly, or monthly unattended runs.

The utility is easily customizable and the interface is clean. It allows you to backup as little or as much of your Firefox environment as you wish.  You can even schedule your backups on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.  Sequential backups can be stored in timestamped directories so you can restore back as far as you like. WHat’s more, you may specify “User-defined” items to have FEBE backup Thunderbird, Greasemonkey scripts, or virtually any data on your computer – Firefox related or not.

Recently a BETA version of FEBE has been released for Firefox 3. The stable version of FEBE is currently availalble only for Firefox 2.0 – 3.0b2.

Yet another feature, which I liked about GMail

Web based email clients like Gmail have a huge advantage that you can log in to your email account just about from anywhere. From your office, home, cyber cafe, your friend’s home, just about everywhere.

But that facility exposes you to a huge risk. Suppose you forgot to log out. Anybody can access your account and all your correspondences are exposed. Since emails are nowadays extensively used for password retrievals, you can only imagine how much damage this small mistake can cause you.

Gmail has a very useful feature to protect you against this mistake. If you carefully see at the bottom of your Gmail windows, you will find a link, which shows you the details of your last login and the IP address from where you have logged in. See screenshot below.

If you click on the Details, then a window like the following will open, which will let you know about the activities which have recently happened to your Gmail account.

And if, your Gmail account is open in any other system, then you are also given the following link.

This account is open in 1 other location at this IP (xxx.xxx.xx.xxx).   Last account activity: 0 minutes ago.  Details

Click on “Details” link to see which all systems you account is logged on.

This seems to be a useful feature.

Look for the Options before you buy your next Printer Cartridge

InkJet Printer market is getting hotter day by day. The technology is rapidly advancing and the prices are dropping. Better and better printers are coming with lesser and lesser price tag. This requires extensive research and costs on the part of manufacturers. But these manufacturer prefer to sell the printers at virtually very little profit, sometimes even at a loss. You can easily get a shiny brand new Printer, just for the price of 2-3 Cartridges. But why ? Have you ever wondered how the InkJet Printer Manufacturers actually make money ?

The secret lies in the INK. Actually, this market is taking shape like a Mobile or Razor Blade market. Ink is like Gold for the manufacturers. They sell it like a proprietary items and spend thousands of pounds and dollars to propagate that if you do not use their branded printer cartridges, it will damage the printer itself. The presence of some spurious cartridge re-fillers, who take the empty cartridges and refill them, have made the situation worse.

But think about it. Are the high prices of Branded Ink Cartridges justified ? Is the underlying technology so advanced that a sustainable competition from good companies cannot come up, who make Cartridges of good quality. Then why the cartridge prices are so high ?

Actually, there are many companies, who offer cartridges of equally good quality at very low prices, and are progressing fast in this hot market. No, we are not talking about spurious manufacturers, who indulge in dubious activities of collecting empty cartridges, refilling them with low quality ink, and then selling it at discounts. But instead, those companies, who manufacture their own cartridges for the popular printers. They make high quality cartridges, with good quality inks, and provide excellent customer care. Thousands of satisfied companies and individuals are their regular customers, and just one phone call or web order is enough for them to get a cartridge delivered at their door step.

One such company is inkshop. They are UK based company and provide ink cartridges at prices that are 30-75% less than that of the name brands. You can have the cartridges of virtually all the popular brands here. They also take International orders and provide free delivery in the UK.

So, now on, be smart. Think a bit before your order for your next cartridge. Hop around, and you may be able to find an equally good quality, albeit a different brand, but at a much lesser price.

Free 30 GB Online Storage at HUMYO

Seems line Online File Storage space is hotting up.

There is yet another launch this week in the already competitive segment of Online File Storage. And it is none less than 30 GB of FREE online storage space at your disposal. And this shear characteristic makes this ahead of the other services like Dropbox, box.net, MediaMax, OmniDrive, Xdrive, ElephantDrive etc.

Welcome to Humyo.

The only restriction is that out of this 30 GB, 25 GB has to be only for the media files, which makes only 5GB available to your documents and other files. I don’t think that this is a major problem for many of the users because most of the space for an average PC user is consumed by the media files.

humyo Uploading and managing files on Humyo is very smooth. You are given a Desktop client software, which allows you to use Humyo storage space as a drive on your computer. It automatically saves your files from your PC to Humyo and keeps them synchronized in real time. The access to this desktop client is limited for a period of 14 days in free access account. But you can use this service through your browser, which is also an easy option.

Humyo can easily be accessible through your mobile and it can detect the Mobile settings by itself in almost all cases.

How do they make money ?

Yes, they do make money, and they do it through their Pro Account, which gives you 100 GB and is available for $59.99 1st year then $79.99 per year. It gives you an access to encrypted file transfers and collaborative features, which allow colleagues to edit stored documents and upload files.

Although, it seems to be an attractive proposition, but I find myself somewhat uncomfortable of storing my sensitive and important data on any FREE online storage space, because who knows they change their policies some day, shut their doors, and your data is gone forever.

Oriango | Online Dictionary of Web Content

Welcome to Oriango.

It is a repository of web content, which allows you to quickly store and share your favorite web links, news, videos, sites, profiles, music, blogs, anything you need. Like most of the other user driven sites, characteristic of Web 2.0, the content on this site is user driven. People submit the content and share it with others. This makes it always updated and informative.

Use of Oriango is extremely easy. It does not require you to register with it. A unique feature of Oriango is that its interface looks like a dictionary, which is familiar even to a child. Users are provided with an easy but powerful search option.

But why Dictionary ? Let’s see what they say…

All the information added to Oriango is arranged alphabetically, as in a dictionary, this way is certain that only the name or the title will matter, allowing independence on their choices. Therefore it’s the user that chooses what is relevant, important or cool, not a group selection, votes or page rank.

Could you get the reasoning ? At least I couldn’t make out much of it.

Although, it is a new site, but it is yet to be seen, how they are going to differentiate themselves in this era of  information overload.

Jing | Capture a screencast and easily share with others

I have been using SnagIt to capture screenshots for long, and can safely say that it is one of the best piece of codes available for this purpose. The promoters of the SnagIt also run a hugely popular service ScreenCast.com, where you can upload your screencast and share them with others.

For those, not knowing what exactly is a screencast…

A screencast is a digital recording of computer screen output, often containing audio narration. Just as a screenshot is a picture of a user’s screen, a screencast is essentially a movie of what a user sees on their monitor.

But many people doesn’t know, how to make a screencast ? There are many software available in the market, some are free and some require you to shell out considerable money.

Thankfully, there is a service in the market, which makes all this process super easy.

Welcome to Jing.

Jing is a screen capturing software application, which allows you to select and capture parts of your screen and save that area as a static picture or a movie.

“It sits nicely on your desktop, ready to capture and share your stuff at a moment’s notice. Simply select an area of your screen, capture it as an image or record it as a video, and then click Share. Jing conveniently places a URL to your content on your clipboard ready for you to paste the URL into any of your conversations.

Your files are hosted on Screencast.com, which is a premier hosting website, specifically made for screen video content. It does not change or diminish the resolution of your content and provides detailed permissions to let you control the accessibility of the media. Users of Jing are provided upto 200MB of space for storing media files and 1 GB of bandwidth that renews monthly.

The best part of Jing is its sharing capabilities.

A simple share button, uploads your media behind the scenes, and the URL is placed into your clipboard. Just paste it in your email, your blog posts or wherever you want.

Quick and Easy.

Search emails quickly with GMail Search Options

Gmail is getting more and more popular these days.

With its ever increasing storage space, the concept of deleting your old emails and attachments to free up space for new emails, is now virtually over. You are no more expected to delete old email.

A big relief.

But this has increased complexity in searching an old email. It sometimes becomes a pain in the ass to search for an old communication, an attachment, a photo in your thousands of thousands of email archives.

Thankfully, there are a few search operators, which come handy in such a situation.

For instance, you can use

  • from:keith has:attachment – to search for an attachment sent by Keith
  • from: xyz http – A link from my pal xyz:
  • to:me is:unread in:inbox – The messages in my inbox sent directly to me that I haven’t read yet.

There are many more such operators.

And if you are of my type, who just can’t remember all these operators, there is a simple solution, a link right alongside the search button, which will open search options available in your Gmail interface. You just have to key in your queries.

There is nothing new to it, but still I have found that most people not using it.

Use it, it is real powerful.

TrueCrypt | A FREE file encryption utility that is useful too

We all know the importance of file encryption to store our sensitive data.

But still, most of us, don’t do that because of procrastination or simply because we don’t know how to do that. Technically speaking, encryption is the process of transforming information using an algorithm (called cipher) to make it unreadable to anyone except those possessing special knowledge.

There are plenty of File Encryption utilities available on the Internet for download. Some are FREE, some are not, and some charge a hefty price. Sometimes, it becomes really difficult for average Joe, to select the perfect file encryption program, as per his own requirements.

TrueCrypt, is a utility, which fits most of the encryption requirement of most of the computer nerds, and the best part is, it is FREE. Recently, one of its stable version 5.1a, was released, well not that recently as it is already about two months back.

IT is an Open Source encryption program which can render your disk, or any file or folder on your disk, totally encrypted in a split second. It works on all platforms; PC, your Mac or Linux, and performs encrption on-the-fly, which means that data are automatically encrypted or decrypted right before they are loaded or saved, without any user intervention.

TrueCrypt also allows you to encrypt your entire USB flash drive. However, you will not be able run TrueCrypt from the USB flash drive. This is because Windows does not support multiple partitions on USB flash drives.

A really nice FREEWARE.
