Google To Come Up With An Enterprise Version Of Nexus One?

It seems that Google might come up with an Enterprise version of Nexus One with a physical QWERTY keyboard and a bigger battery. Google launched the Nexus One just a few days ago at the Android Press Conference. nexus-one-specs-shot

Andy Rubin, Google Engineering VP, mentioned that there might be a possibility of the enterprise version of Nexus One to have a physical keyboard and a bigger battery, while on stage during the ongoing CES (Consumer Electronic Show) 2010. The original question asked to Andy Rubin, by Walk Mossberg, was whether Google will launch more phones during this year or not. Mossberg also asked about the possibility of a smaller or mini version of Nexus One like the Nokia N97 Mini to which Rubin’s nodded his head which implied a No! Rubin also praised the guys at HTC, who will be manufacturing the Nexus One for Google.

He said We threw out crazy ideas to our partners at HTC and they were pretty good about plucking the good ones out of the air and building them into the device.

Rubin also told that Google Nexus One is the start of a new breed of Superphonein the market. He said that Google wanted to make purchasing phones for consumer more efficient and thus the idea of buying the phone directly through Google Checkout.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD5xxx Series Announced

ATI launched Dx11 based cards for Desktop users, last year in September-October itself. The HD5xxx series of card from ATI were not only technologically advanced than their predecessor, they even offered better performance at a lower power consumption. There has always been a very high degree of competition among ATI and Nvidia in the desktop graphics card market but the situation is completely opposite in the Mobile Graphic segment. 13314_large_ATI Mobility 5000-1

ATI today finally launched the Mobileedition of their popular HD5xxx series of graphics card for laptops/notebooks. The Mobility Radeon will include different series like HD 5400, HD 5600, HD 5700 and HD 5800. As the numbering suggests, HD 580xx series will be the bestof the lot. ATI claims that the HD5xxx series provide up to 4 times more performance compared to its predecessor, Mobility Radeon 4xxx series. The Mobility Radeon 5xxx series of graphics card are based on 40nm fabrication process, and they support GDDR5 memory, provided the OEM decides to implement it on the card. Also supported are HDMI 1.3, ATI’s EyeInfinity technology which allows a user to use more than 2 monitor at once and Display Port. The ATI Mobility Radeon series will be like their desktop counterparts, first graphics card in the mobile segment to support Dx11.

Asus will be the first laptop manufacture to release laptops using ATI Mobility Radeon 5xxx series of graphics card.

Apple Not To Use Intel Atom Processors In “iSlate”?

It seems that Apple has ditched the popular Intel Atom processor for their upcoming but still unannounced iSlatetouchscreen tablet device. The folks over at pocket-lint.com had a conversation with the Apple’s design manufactureapple-logo partners, and they have indicated that Apple won’t be using an Intel Atom processor to power the iSlate.

Apple instead seems to have used a processor made by a firm which they had acquired 2 years ago, named P A Semi. The report from pocket-lint.com says that Apple will not be using the Intel Atom processors, which contradicts the leaked specs of the iSlate , we had reported to our readers a few days ago. The leaked specifications of the iSlatestated that the device will be using an Intel Core 2 Duo low voltage processor. The leaked specification do look over the top to me as fitting all the above said stuff in such a small form factor seems impossible right now, with the available technology. The iSlatewill hopefully be announced on 26th January at the Yerba Buena Center For The Arts as we had reported earlier. Even though Apple has not mentioned anything about a touchscreen tablet device, the whole of the internet is currently abuzz with Apple’s iSlatedevice. Whether these are just plain rumors or whether these rumors are true to a certain extent, can only be found out at the upcoming BigApple event. These rumors have definitely helped Apple though, as the value of there shares are soaring right now.

Samsung Camcorders With Wifi Connectivity And Ultra High Zoom Level

Samsung today unveiled their latest S and F range of camcorders at CES 2010. The S series of Camcorders offer integrated Wi-fi connectivity and support DLNA as well. The S series of camcorder will be the first in the market to support Wi-fi and DLNA. The F series has 3 models namely SMX-F40, SMX-F43 and SMX-F44. All the 3 models feature Samsung’s Schneider Kreuznach lens and can record videos in 720p resolution as well. They also have 52x optical zoom level alongside the 65x digital zoom. Face detection of up to 5 faces is also present. The models of the camcorder in the new S series are HMX-S10, HMX-S15 and HMX-S16. These 3 camcorders currently represent the bestHD camcorders Samsung has to offer in the market right now. All the 3 camcorders from the S series, feature the new proprietary Victoria Engine processor from Samsung. The HMX-S15 and S16 models feature a 32GB and 64GB SSD respectively for storing the captured videos and pictures, while all other camcorders including the ones in F series, have a SD/SDHC slot.

Lenovo Unveils Thinkpad Edge Series of Laptop

Lenovo today announced its Thinkpad Edge series of laptops targeted towards small to medium sized business firms, at CES 2010. The Thinkpad Edge series will contain laptops with varying screen sizes of 13, 14and 15inches. The Thinkpad series of laptops from Lenovo are known for their durability and reliability. These laptops will feature a spill-resistant keyboard, and a large multi-touch trackpad.

The 13Thinkpad Edge laptop will be the first laptop in the market to feature AMD’s Vision Pro Technology along with an AMD dual core processor.

Lenovo says that the laptops will have a battery life of up to 8 hours. The laptops will also come equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth whereas 3G and WiMAX connectivity features will be optional. The Function (Fn) key has been re-designed by Lenovo so as to provide users with one finger access to the laptop’s multimedia functions. Also the System Req. key has been omitted from the keyboards’ layout. The Thinkpad Edge series of laptop can be powered by either an AMD Neo/AMD Turion processor or by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

The 13Thinkpad Edge laptop will be available in retail outlets starting 5th Jan with the base model being available for 549$. The 14and 15versions will hit the market in Q2 of 2010.

HTC To Announce A Touchscreen Tablet Device At CES?

Apple has not yet even officially announced or confirmed the existence of the iSlate, and its competitors banking on the rumors have started making tablet touchscreen devices. Many Mobiles manufacturer’s and Computer manufacturerhtc-logo must be waiting to see the response of the public when Apple officially announces the iSlate.

Previously many manufacturer’s tried launching a tablet touchscreen device but failed miserably to capture a sizeable market share. Few days ago we told you about Notion’s Ink Adam Tablet, and now if rumors are to be believed, HTC is all set to announce a Touchscreen tablet device at the upcoming CES. The tablet touchscreen device is believed to be using a Qualacomm based processor and will be running the Android OS. There is no word whether the tablet touchscreen device supports Multi-touch or not. HTC has been known for making WinMo and Android based phones until now.

It will be interesting to see whether this rumor of a tablet touchscreen device from HTC turns out to be true or not.

“Big” Apple Event Scheduled On 26th Jan

Fox News just confirmed that Apple has scheduled an event on 26th Jan in San Franciscoapple_tablet at Yerba Buena. The spokesperson from Apple told that the scheduled event is going to be a bigone. Nothing at this point is official, but my guess is Apple will be announcing about the Apple iSlate/Tablet in this event, about which we have been hearing a lot since the past few weeks.

The spokesperson from Apple also said that the event will focus on the mobility space which indicates something related to Apple’s iPod/iPod Touch line up. The upcoming bigApple event will be held at Yerba Buena Center For The Arts, where previously Apple has held its iPod centered events every year. Rumors of Apple Tablet where enough to push the stock of Apple at an all time high. While there is a strong probability of Apple announcing a Tablet PC, the fact that Apple is also known to scrap products just before its scheduled announcement must be kept in mind as well.

This will be the first time in recent memory that Apple will not be announcing a product launch at the Mac World.

GSM Encryption Cracked After 21 Years

It has been 21 years since Global Systems for Mobile Communications (GSM) has beengsm using the A5/1 encryption technology to protect the privacy of its user. Until date, many people tried to crack the encryption technology used by GSM but failed. However, a 28 year old guy of German race, named Karsten Nohl told the world that he has managed to crack the security code at the Chaos Communication Congress a four day conference of computer hackers in Berlin.

More than 80% of the network providers over the world use the GSM technology over its rival CDMA technology. Mr. Nohl, who is a doctorate in computer engineering from the University Of Virginia, said that cracking the GSM security standard required 24 members of the Chaos Computer Club, and that he did it purely on academic purposes and that he kept his work within the public domain. He said that his work cannot be deemed illegal because he did not crack/decipher any actual digital calls. Mr. Nohl also said that the GSM algorithm code book was easily available on various bit torrent sites.

Mr. Nohl said “We are not recommending people use this information to break the law.   What we are doing is trying to goad the world’s wireless operators to use better security.”

The A5/1 encryption technology is a 64 bit binary code encryption technology, which is considered old by today’s standard. The GSM Association has devised the successor to A5/1, known as A5/3, which has a 128 bit encryption technique. The GSM Association also claims that there is very little chance of the security of the GSM users being compromised as hackers would have to pick one call out of thousand of calls at a cell phone tower, which requires exorbitantly priced equipments and software. The cracking of the GSM encryption has put on stake the privacy of more than 3.6 billion GSM users all over the world.

The 3rd Generation (3G) network uses the 128 bit encryption technique.

New Firmware Update For 27” Apple iMac Available

Apple products have been having a plethora of issues in the past one year. First poor HDD performance in their new Macbook Pros, then the iPhone 3GS overheating etc. Apple had recently launched new 21.5and 27iMacs during thenew-apple-imac month of October. The new iMacs featured Intel Core i5 and i7 based processors, DDR3 Memory, and a bigger screen size. The new iMacs were plagued with many problems like cracked screens apparently due to poor packaging issue and flickering on the screen.

Apple today released a new Firmware update meant only for the 27iMacs with either ATi HD4670 or HD4850. This firmware update reportedly fixes the flickering issue present in the 27iMacs. Users who had spent a fortune and ordered an iMac as a X-Mas gift for themselves were pretty disappointed when Apple postponed their delivery dates to after the holiday season. When a spokesperson from Apple was asked about the delay in the deliveries, he told The new iMac has been a huge hit and we are working hard to fulfill orders as quickly as possible.   We apologize for any inconvenience or delay in delivery this may cause our customers,” instead of accepting the fact that Apple has been delaying the shipments of the new iMacs due to graphical glitches.

The update page states that Do not disturb or shut off the power on your iMac during this update. Loss of power could result in your iMac failing to start up.The firmware update weighs in at 683KB and is only for iMacs running OS X 10.6.2 or higher.The firmware update can be directly downloaded from Apple’s server from here.

Intel Announces “Pineview” Based Atom Processors

Netbooks have sold like hot cakes this year. Their small form factor, along with the extraAtom long battery life have made them a big hit among the consumers. The Intel Atom processor which is used by all the netbook manufacturers, has always been criticized for its poor performance, and on the other hand it has always been praised for its low power consumption. The Intel Atom processor is usually coupled with a 945 based chipset which consumes a lot of power. Intel have been working hard on this front and the result is Pineview.

The new processor has a DDR2 Memory controller, graphics processor integrated into its core which not only reduces the manufacturing cost, but also reduces the power consumption by a huge margin. The Pineview series of processor will be coupled with a brand new chipset as well the NM10 Express Chipset. The pineview processor and the NM10 Express chipset collectively form the PineTrail platform. The NM10 Express Chipset supports upto 8 USB 2.0 ports, and has 2x 32bit PCIe Slots along with Intel’s HD Audio.

Intel announced 3 new Pineview based processors D410, D510 and N450. The D510 processor is a dual core one and has 1MB of L2 cache with a TDP of 15W, and are meant only for entry level desktop PCs. The D410 and the N450 processor are single core ones and have a L2 cache of 512KB. The D510 processor has a TDP of 12W (including the chipset) while the N450 has a TDP of 7W (Including the chipset). All the three processors run at 1.66GHz.

Bluetooth 4.0 Specifications Revealed

Bluetooth is one feature which everyone in today’s modern world uses to share files withbluetooth his or her friend circle. Currently Bluetooth is in version 2.0 and Bluetooth 3.0 will soon be implemented in mobiles from next year. Today at Bellevue, WA, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) revealed the specifications of upcoming Bluetooth 4.0. The transfer rate offered by Bluetooth 4.0 will be around 1Mbps, and it will transmit data at 2.4Ghz frequency.

Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director of Bluetooth SIG said With today’s announcement the race is on for product designers to be the first to market. Bluetooth low energy modules for all sorts of new products may now be qualified this is an important step towards our goal of enabling new markets with Bluetooth wireless technology. For example, the Continua Health Alliance has already selected Bluetooth low energy technology as a transport for the next version of its guidelines.

Bluetooth 4.0 will see the implementation of bluetooth technology in many fields which we have not even imagined until now like Medical, Healthcare, Sports and Fitness etc. Today’s news from the Bluetooth SIG is an exciting step forward for technology in mobile health and wellness devices,said Rick Cnossen, president and board chair, Continua Health Alliance. Our selection of Bluetooth low energy for the Continua Version Two Design Guidelines extends exciting new capabilities to manufacturers and consumers alike, as well as enabling additional use cases within the Continua ecosystem.”

Bluetooth 4.0 features two types of implementation single mode and dual mode. Single mode chip features a link layer providing very low idle power consumption. On the other hand, the dual mode chip can be integrated into an old bluetooth controller. This will allow manufacturers to save cost to a certain extent. and still be able to provide the low power consumption offered by Bluetooth 4.0. The security has also been beefed up to full AES-128 encryption using CCM.

Dell Introduces Inspiron One 19 and Studio 17: Touchscreen Desktop and Laptop

Dell, the 3rd largest PC manufacturer of the world, has launched a new notebook and computer each, with touch-screen functionality. dell-logo-online-newThe Inspiron One 19 computer has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, up to 4GB DDR2 RAM, and a maximum storage capacity of 750GB. The screen size of the LCD is 19″, having a resolution of 1440*900. The screen is, according to Dell, multi-touch enabled.

The Inspiron One 19, and Studio 17 laptop, feature Wifi, 1.3Mp webcam, a dual 2-watt speakersalong with 6 USB ports. The Studio 17 laptop is the first ever notebook from Dell to offer touchscreen functionality. It features a Core i7 processor, and supports a maximum of 8GB RAM. The laptop has a 17.3screen, with a resolution of 1600*900. It also comes with JBL branded speakers, and the storage size of the hard-disk is expandable to a maximum of 1TB. A Blu-Ray Drive is optional with the laptop. The graphics department of Studio 17 laptop is handled by the relatively low-end ATi Radeon HD4650. Both the computer and the laptop, come pre-loaded with Windows 7. Dell did not announce the price of the Studio 17 laptop, but the Inspiron One 19 computer will be available in India with a MRP of Rs 29,900.

JVC Launches XS-SR3 Speakers for iPod/iPhone

JVC today launched its XS-SR3 speaker which is compatible with Apple’s iPod/iPhone. The speaker can hold the iPod/iPhone either in vertical or horizontal mode, so that you can enjoy your videos in widescreen. The JVC XS-SR3 comes with a 5W speaker, which according to JVC is enough to blow you away when you crank the volume level to the maximum. The retail package of the device also includes a remote. The speakers also feature two ports for audio input analog and digital. The speakers and the dock have a sleek design to match the glossy black color of the device. JVC also states that the speakers can alternatively be used a computer speaker system.

The device will be available from the end of this month and the retail price will be around 149.95 US$.

MSI X-Slim X350 CULV Laptop

1819030 MSI is soon going to launch a laptop which has a 13.4inch LED Backlit display with a resolution of 1366*768., and weighs in only 3.31pounds. The model number of this CULV laptop is X-Slim X350 and like the earlier X-Slim models, this laptop also features an Intel CULV Core 2 Duo processor.   The laptop has a promising battery life of up to 9 hours. It also features an integrated HDMI port, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, Wi-Fi, 1.3MP Camera, SD Card Reader and an Intel GMA4500 handles the graphics department. The laptop runs on Windows 7 Home Premium and an external DVD or a Blu-Ray drive is optional with the laptop.

There is no official word from MSI about the pricing of this CULV laptop till now. I think this laptop will be launched by MSI at the upcoming CES 2010.

Manage Your Nokia Phone From Your Mac with BluePhoneElite

If you are a Mac user and own a Nokia phone, chances are you might be having a hard time finding a software which will make your job of managing your phone’s SMS, contacts via your Mac easy. Sadly, Nokia has only released a plug-in for iSync, which allows a user to sync  contacts and calendar entries with your Mac.

Nokia has not released either Nokia PC Suite or Ovi Suite for Mac, thus leaving the Mac users without any support. This is where BluePhoneElite 2 comes to the rescue. The software allows you to manage your call logs, messages, and contacts right from your Mac. The software communicates with your phone via Bluetooth, and the user needs to install an application called BPEnableron his mobile phone before BluePhoneElite 2 is able to synchronize your contacts, messages and call log. The icon of the software on the dock shows 2 bars indicating the network strength and the battery level, which is definitely a nice feature.

BluePhoneElite2 has a Message Center, which shows all your messages in a threaded view, which is very useful. Users can reply to SMS messages from their Mac easily, without even touching their phone. The most interesting and useful feature of BluePhoneElite 2 is the ability to use the speaker of your Mac as a loudspeaker. Basically it means that when you receive a new call, you can use BluePhoneElite 2 to accept the incoming call and you can hear the callers voice from the loudspeaker of your Mac, and the inbuilt microphone will transmit your voice to the caller.  The software also allows you to change the profile of your phone. BluePhoneElite 2 also has an option to setup hotkeys to bring up the message center, call center and to perform several other functions.

BluePhoneElite 2 has few features which even Nokia’s PC/Ovi suite lacks. Also this is the only software I have ever come across for my Mac, which can easily replace Nokia’s Ovi Suite. The software costs 24.95$, which is a bit steep, but for the functionality this software offers, I guess users won’t mind forking out a little bit more.
