Sony Ericsson Satio Hands-on Review

se-satio-1_b se-satio

Sony Ericsson announced their flagship handset Satio, at MWC, Barcelona. They kept Satio under the Entertainment Unlimited caption for its all round performance. Satio runs Symbian S60 version 5 OS, and competes directly with Nokia N97 and Samsung Omnia HD. Satio gives very tough competition to both. Satio is known more for its 12.1 MP camera and its modified UI over Symbian. After nearly eight months, the phone is available all round the globe and here is our review of Sony Ericsson Satio. Satio is priced at around 500 Euros ($750/31000 INR).

Unboxing and Build Quality

A box packed version of Satio comes HPM 77, TV out cable, USB cord, 8 GB micro SD card, Stylus, Leather case and BST 33 1000mAh Li-Po battery. Sony Ericsson is going environmental friendly, and does not include a PC Suite CD, instead the PC suite file is stored in the 8 GB memory card. For installing it just connect the phone in mass storage mode and install it. The phone weights only 124 gm, the reason is the plastic body. The phone feels like a feather in hand. We have the black colored body and the look is fantastic. The back of the phone shines and feel like velvet.

Phone Overview

Satio is a fully resistive touch screen handset with 3.5inch display and a 640*360 resolution screen. There are three buttons below the screen just like in 5800 Xpress Music. On the right hand side there is volume rocker control which also works as camera zoom button.

At the bottom of the phone, there is a shortcut button to camera albums, and below it is a button to switch to video recording from image shooting and vice versa when using camera. The last button is the camera button to take pictures; it is surrounded by a blue led light, which glows when the camera is on.

On the left hand side is the button to lock/unlock the screen. Below it is the Sony Ericsson proprietary Fast Port, at the bottom left is the micro SD slot. The phone doesn’t have a stereo speaker and the only speaker is located on the top of the phone along with the power button. There is also a light on the top left of the phone which glows when phone is connected to PC or charger.

Features and User Interface (UI)

Satio Homescreen Satio Main Menu Satio Media Center Home Screen

Satio runs on Symbian S60 version 5 OS but Sony Ericsson modified it to a great extent. Kinetic scrolling is available in all Sony Ericsson modified UI like media center, favorite contacts etc. The home screen is modified by Sony Ericsson which has five standby panels (it can be changed). The first from the left is the favorite contacts, second is the internet bookmarks, the third is for switching to home screen, the fourth is the shortcut to camera pictures and the fifth has the applications.

Satio Photo Menu Satio Music Menu Satio Video Menu

At the bottom there is a music player widget which displays the album art with the most commonly used music functions like play/pause etc option when music player is minimized. The main menu is also modified and is very intuitive and good in looks compared to the other Nokia devices that run on Symbian S60 version 5 OS. The media center is similar to the media center in Sony Ericsson Walkman series handset and it also has kinetic scrolling. There is three options photo, music and video under media option.

Satio Now Playing Screen Satio Music Widget

Overall the UI is far better than all Nokia devices with Symbian S60 Version 5 OS which is boring and looks pale. Text can be entered by Handwriting, Mini QWERTY keyboard, Full screen QWERTY and Alphanumeric keypad, we preferred Full screen QWERTY as it was bigger. Entering text was very easy as the phone was very sensitive. Handwriting recognition was very impressive as it detected almost all writing without any problem.

With a 12.1 MP camera, you expect Satio  to be an outstanding camera phone, and it doesn’t disappoint at all. Along with 12.1 Mp it also has LED flash for video recording and Xenon flash for photography. You can take pictures in three different resolutions, 4:3 by 12.1 Mp, 3:2 by 10 Mp and 16:9 by 9 Mp. The pictures taken are very clear and have true colors.

Features like Face detection, Smile shutter, BestPic, Red-eye reduction and touch capture are also available, however the phone lacks manual ISO. Taking panorama pictures is very easy as you don’t need to adjust the picture like other devices. To take panorama pictures, click the first picture, and move the camera, it will automatically detect the correct position and take the picture. Video is recorded in VGA resolution @30fps in MP4 format. Video stabilizer and light is also available.

Note: These are pictures taken by the camera the first picture is of a running fan in a complete dark room. The other three pictures are taken in 10, 12 and 9 MP respectively.

Music and Video

The music quality is nowhere near to the standards of walkman series handset like W995, because it lacks bass. The sound however is very loud and clear, just the lack of bass will be bothering. You cannot change the equalizer as there is no option available right now. The now playing UI is very good in looks. Video is played back in MP4 format.

Connectivity and Battery life

WAP 2.0/HTML browser based on webkit engine with Flash lite support, gives you a very nice browsing experience, however no kinetic scrolling is available. Google maps 3.0.1 and Wise Pilot are pre installed. One thing we noticed was that, the GPS was able to connect even when the phone was inside a two storied building. The only game which comes with the phone is Labyrinth which runs very smoothly. There is also a search option, using which you can search anything on the phone.

The WiFi worked effortlessly as there were no connection drops and connecting to a WiFi network was a piece of cake. A 1000 mAh Li-Po battery is not enough for this monster. The battery nearly runs throughout the day after a bit more than average use. Music can be played for more than 26 hours and you get 11 hours talk time, however, the problem arises when you use GPS, and perform heavy multitasking. The battery backup is average and is the only negative point in the phone.

Even though Satio has only a 600 MHz processor and 256MB of RAM, it runs very fast. The phone hasn’t crashed yet, and worked smoothly all long. However, the battery a bit weak, and barely pulls through the entire day after a bit more than average use. All over the phone performs very well in nearly every area, and is definitely an all rounder. The UI, camera and strong CPU are the major strength of the device and the only negative point is the battery.

Sony Ericsson’s new innovative headphone MH907

Sony Ericsson few weeks ago announced that on 21 September they will introduce a world’s first innovative accessory. The suspense is now over and the accessory is MH907 MOTION ACTIVATED HEADPHONE.

The motion activated headphone lets you pick up call, pause/ play music just by putting in and out your headphone. Now that is cool. Now no need to take out your mobile out of your pocket in a crowded metro to pause your music instead just put off the earphones and your music is paused.

Movement = music + calls.
When both earbuds are inserted, the phone’s music  player automatically starts. Remove one earbud to pause music and reinsert it to begin playing the track again. To answer a call, insert one earbud. Or, if you are listening to music and receive a call, just remove one earbud and reinsert it. It is that simple.

Next generation technology.
SensMeâ„¢ Control is a unique technology letting you handle calls or the music player on a mobile phone in a simple and intuitive way there are no buttons. Movement controls your mobile phone.
It simply senses if the earbuds are in use and responds, letting you become the remote control.

iPhone 3GS capable of 1080p HD video playback

Are you fed up by just hearing news about applications of iPhone??? Now here is a news that will drop your jaw down to the floor. Apple iPhone 3GS is capable of 1080p HD video playback. Now what you have to say about that?? iPhone 3GS is really now the next generation phone. Though Apple officially didn’t announce it till now but it has been checked by officials of engadget in China. 10 Mbps bitrate 1080p video played fine but 20 Mbps and 30 Mbps were stuttering. As it is not officially announced by Apple so bugs are expected with it now. One of the bugs is with the audio decoder. The hardware is capable of handling the 1080p video playback, so now just the update from Apple is awaited and then iPhone 3GS will be the only phone in the world to play 1080p HD video. However, will the iPhone 3GS can output it after decoding is not clear because there are no HDMI cables for iPhone. The iPhone 3GS already is the fastest iPhone till now and now the 1080p HD video playback is making it difficult for not to buy.

Samsung OmniaHD I8910 doesn’t has 1 GHz CPU in India

Samsung OmniaHD I8910, the first gsm mobile in the world which has a HD video recording of 720p was released in India recently. What made even a bigger noise than its release is that it has a 1 GHz CPU. Before coming to India OmniaHD was already launched in other countries but nowhere it was mentioned that it has a 1 GHz CPU. The 1 GHz CPU was written on the back of the OmniaHD box in India. This turned many people’s head around and even ours. When contacted Samsung about this matter they made themselves clear that it is a mistake made from their side. What actually happened is that the 600MHz ARM Cortex-A8 CPU and the 420 MHz DSP (sound processing chip) were written altogether as 1 GHz. Well both are nowhere related to each other so it was wrong for Samsung to write something like that. Samsung said that it’s a printing mistake but we feel that it was a marketing strategy from Samsung.

Apple iPhone exploded in Southern France

Another Apple device exploded. This time a French teenager got injured when his girlfriend’s iPhone exploded and the screen was shattered, sending shreds of glasses up in the air.

The teenager thankfully didn’t lose his eyes. This happened only few weeks after an incident in Britain where a iPod Touch exploded. Before the explosion the device started making a hissing sound.

Apple has offered a refund to the owners of the exploded device in Britain but we don’t know if they will do that for this incident. Apple has kept quite on this topic and has not made any public statements.

Considering that Apple devices are exploding everywhere, we urge iPhone and iPod touch owners to be aware of it, if your device starts making a hissing noise please try and keep it away from yourself.

Samsung OmniaPRO Preview

Samsung’s Pocket PC OmniaPRO is a very good piece of work. The features of the phone makes it a very tough competitor for HTC Pro2. OmniaPRO is a windows phone. OmniaPRO has a very good cpu and apart from being a pocket pc it has a very good camera and the DNSe sound system makes it good in entertainment as well. Samsung has selected PsoC(R) TrueTouch touchscreen in OmniaPRO which gives OmniaPRO a huge plus point. The specifications are as follows.

The phone is a pocket pc but also has all requirements of good entertainment as well. The 3.5 inch screen, WVGA resolution, 800Mhz processor, 256MB RAM, dedicated graphic accelerator and many more makes this phone a better choice than HTC Pro 2. Samsung who has not been known as a veteran in communicator devices are now showing improvement with the introduction of omniaPRO. The phone indeed has very good features. The UI especially the Touch Gallery is very good. Samsungs proprietary TouchWIZ UI is installed on top of Windows OS. The widgets on the home screen can be set as two different modes work and life. Samsung has done well to improve from the predecessor Omnia in the UI. OmniaPRO is indeed a better choice when it comes to a communicator.

Sony Ericsson Yari Preview

The phone with the latest technology of gesture control launched by Sony Ericsson on the MCW earlier this year was Yari. The phone has the first gesture gaming technology. However gesture gaming was available in Japan earlier and is provided by Japanese brand DoCoMo, but now Sony Ericsson is bringing it in the front of entire world. Apart from gesture control the phone has many other features-

Yari is more appealing for gaming users and some techies because of the latest gesture controlling. Apart from this the phone has a 5 MP camera, GPS, but the absence of wi-fi(still not confirmed because SE said it is DLNA certified but no mention in its specification) is a big drawback. The music doesn’t has the latest Clear Bass technology instead has the old Mega Bass. The UI is typical SE but modified. The phone is a good mixture of entertainment and browsing. But the screen is small because when playing gesture control games will the user will be able to see the 2.4 inches screen from a distance. Overall a very good phone for people whose main priority is gaming and a good phone for people taking the overall view. There has not been many complains with Sony Ericsson seeing their latest three upcoming phones. Practically this phone will not be able to achieve the success which Satio could achieve.

Sony Ericsson Aino Preview

Another Sony Ericsson handset which was previewed on the MCW held in Barcelona was Aino. This phone was hyped earlier as a PlayStation phone but nothing as such is clear to us. However the phone has good features and they are as follows-

     3G network-

               Talk time-4 hours 30 min

               Standby-367 hours

               Video Call-1hour 40 minutes

The phone is a good combination of looks, music, video playback, browsing and many more. A wireless earphone is more welcomed. The main thing which adds a zing in this phone is that it’s a touch screen slider. The phone also has many new walkman backgrounds like a recorder, cd player and gramophones running in background. The phone has no portrait mode in now playing UI only landscape. However the resolution is somewhat strange and no secondary camera for video calling are few negatives about this phone. The touch interface is only available in media and camera and above all it’s the first capacitive touch screen phone from Sony Ericsson. After seeing Satio, Aino and Yari from Sony Ericsson we can say that Sony Ericsson is changing now.

This is what we know till know about this phone. The phone is heavily loaded with features, however the phone will face competition with Samsung Pixon 12 and Nokia N97 who are already out in the market.
