9to5Macnotes that the latest build of OS X Mountain Lion released last week includes the option for bringing iOS-like automatic app downloads to Mac App Store purchases.
Like on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, when you download an app it automatically installs it on all of your iOS devices if the option is turned on and the devices are logged into the same App Store account. A similar feature has been added in the latest developer preview of OS X Mountain Lion. In the latest build, if your Macs are logged into the same App Store account, the app will automatically install on all Macs. It seems that OS X Mountain Lion is all about unification rather than iOS-ification.
Apple has been frequently releasing updates of OS X Mountain Lion to its Mac developer community, and the company is expected to offer many more details on the next-generation operating system at next month’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. The OS is expected to see a public launch in “late summer” of this year.
Earlier this month, we reported that Apple is preparing a major R&D facility in Israel. Russian newspaper Izvestiareports [Google translation] that the organizers behind the Skolkovo technology park near Moscow are apparently talking with a numerous of notable tech companies including Apple, Google, and Facebook about locating research and development facilities in the area.
Skolkovo has already closed deals with Microsoft, IBM, General Electric, Cisco, and others. The project’s supporters’ vision is to make this Russia’s version of Silicon Valley created by dozens of major corporations.
According to the report, Apple officials in Moscow declined to comment on the claims, but Skolkovo executive Roman Romanovsky indicated that the two sides are interested in negotiating about possibilities. However, no deal is expected to be imminent. Romanovsky hopes that the talks will eventually lead to an agreement.
Just a couple of days ago, we reported that Aaron Sorkin had officially agreed to script for the Sony’s upcoming film adaptation of Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography of Steve Jobs. Sorkin is well know for his work on The West Wing, The Social Network, Moneyball, and A Few Good Men. The cast for the film has not been determined yet, but rumors have suggested that George Clooney and Noah Wyle may be the top choices for the role of Jobs.
Now, Reuters reports that Sorkin held an interview with reporters and said he was still looking for something in Jobs’ life to hang the movie on.
Sorkin noted that “The Social Network” saw the Facebook story through the lens of an acrimonious lawsuit that pitted CEO Mark Zuckerberg against his Harvard friends over the creation of the social media network.
“Drama is tension versus obstacle. Someone wants something, something is standing in their way of getting it. They want the money, they want the girl, they want to get to Philadelphia – doesn’t matter … And I need to find that event and I will. I just don’t know what it is,” Sorkin said.
According to Sorkin, the movie won’t be straight from the biography. He also disclosed that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has been hired as a consultant by Sony Pictures to advise the filmmakers on the technical aspects of computers and about Jobs himself.
Sounds like the movie will actually be good unlike the movie Ashton Kutcher’s starring in.
The Apple-Samsung relationship is an interesting love-hate relationship. Today, DigiTimes reports that Apple has placed “huge” orders for DRAM chips with Elpida, claiming half of the capacity at the firm’s main plant in Hiroshima, Japan.
Reuters noted that the rumor created a significant effect on fellow DRAM manufacturers Samsung and Hynix, with Samsung losing $10 billion in market value today in a 6% stock decline. Hynix was down nearly 9%. A $10 billion hit due to a rumor is pretty big dent to Samsung.
“It looks like Apple doesn’t want to see Samsung and hynix dominate the chip market. Apple wants to maintain its bargaining power by keeping Elpida running,” said Choi Do-yeon, an analyst at LIG Investment & Securities.
Samsung was the main supplier of Retina displays for Apple’s new iPad when it launched in March. Samsung also builds the custom A5X chip that powers the new iPad.
If the rumor is true, it is becoming even more evident that Apple doesn’t need Samsung. It is Samsung who needs Apple.
Apple’s CEO Tim Cook today met with the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John Boehner. The reason for the meeting is still uknown, but it is possible that Cook was lobbying Boehner to pass a tax holiday that would allow Apple and other companies with large overseas tax holdings to bring back their earnings at a lower corporate tax rate.
The picture shows the official Speaker of the House and Cook having a conversation with formal attire in Washington, D.C. The photo came with no details and it is unknown what the two were discussing.
Boehner is an outspoken opponent of a House measure aimed at China that would make U.S. take action if it was suspected that a country was manipulating the value of its currency.
As of the most recent earnings call, Apple has $74 billion of its $110 billion in cash and marketable securities offshore.

Wyle is famous for portraying Steve Jobs in the 1999 made-for-TV film, The Pirates of Silicon Valley, which focused on the early days of Jobs and Bill Gates. Wyle back in 1999 did a fantastic job. So, he may be a perfect fit for this movie too.
This project is completely separate from the independent film about Jobs that features Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs. Last week, Kutcher was spotted wearing Jobs’s famous wardrobe while he was going to the film’s set.
Yesterday, it was reported that Apple is preparing to release thinner MacBook Pro models with Retina displays. The new MacBook Pros will reportedly also include ports for the MagSafe power connector, two USB ports, and audio in/out jacks along the left side, with a battery level indicator also included along the same side. The right side is said to offer a pair of Thunderbolt ports, another USB port, an SD card slot, and a Kensington lock slot. It was also reported that iMacs will be receiving the Retina display too.
9to5Mac now reports that Apple is planning to bring Retina displays to the MacBook Air as well, with that upgrade being the most significant change for the next-generation line. The report also suggests that the chance of new MacBook Airs being announced at WWDC 2012 next month is unlikely. This is because Apple is still working to meet the Retina display’s power requirements within the MacBook Air’s thin form factor.
Once again, this is all speculation until Apple confirms. So, take it with a grain of salt.
Earlier, we reported that the new Macs may offer a Retina display. Now, The Wall Street Journal now reports that Apple is planning to reveal an upgrade to iCloud at next month’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), with one of the main new features being a photo-sharing functionality.
Apple is also reportedly looking to extend iCloud’s Photostream feature to video, allowing users to access their personal videos through iCloud. In addition, the report confirms that Notes and Reminders will be accessible via iCloud.com. Finally.
The new features will reportedly be revealed at WWDC 2012 and will make their way into iOS 6, which is also expected to be previewed at WWDC.
Sounds like the announcements that will be made at WWDC 2012 will be another milestone for Apple.
With WWDC 2012 less than a month away, the Apple rumor mill is in full swing. Today, Bloomberg has confirmed a report from earlier today that Apple is preparing to release thinner MacBook Pro models with Retina displays. Apple’s MacBook Pro lineup was last updated in October of 2011, and is due for an update anytime. The MacBook Pro hasn’t had a significant redesign since 2008 either.
In addition, ABC News reports that not only the MacBook Pro family but also the iMac line is set to gain ultra high-resolution “Retina” displays.
As incredible as this sounds, it should be pointed out that nothing is confirmed until Apple announces it officially.
Last month, we reported that Apple was accused of false 4G marketing claims on the new iPad by the Australian government. Then, within 24 hours, it was reported that Apple was offering refunds to people who bought its latest iPad on Telstra’s network in Australia. Apple later defended the “4G” branding for iPad in Australia. Later on, more accusations followed regarding the marketing.
Now, it seems that in many of Apple’s stores, the 4G LTE-capable iPad has been rebranded as “iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular” due to the controversy, AppleInsider reports. The change has even occurred in U.S. and Canada, where networks are compatible with the 4G LTE radio found in the third-generation iPad.
Changes have also occurred in both the U.K. and Australia, where the local government took issue with the fact that the new iPad was advertised as being a 4G LTE device, even though it is not compatible with any 4G networks in those countries.
“This product supports very fast cellular networks. It is not compatible with current Australian 4G LTE networks and WiMAX networks,” the Australian Apple store reads under the “Wi-Fi + Cellular” listing. “For service from a wireless carrier, sign up for a simple, month-by-month plan on your iPad and cancel anytime without penalty.”
