Sony Ericsson’s New MH907 Headphones Make Sound Exclusive To Your Ears

Imagine this scenario: You are listening to a song on your mobile phone, and just before your favorite line comes, somebody enters your room and starts blabbering. You pull out the earbuds. When you put them back, you’ve missed the line.

mh907_black Sony Ericsson wishes to cease this hassle with their new MH907 motion activated headphones. The button less headphones will only work when you put them in your ears. Two things can happen when you pull the buds out of your ears: If listening to music, it will automatically pause. If you are in a call, the call will be terminated.

This is actually quite an intuitive concept made into reality. To pick up a call, all you need to do is pick up the earbud and put it in your ear. If you need music, just wear a bud and it will start. The technology does not depend upon pressure or force on the surface of the earbud, so nothing bad will happen when the headset is placed in your bag or pocket. Engadget reports that this technology is capacitive in nature. In other words, removing an ear bud isn’t breaking the flow of current between buds (and across your noodle) — it’s destroying the dynamic capacitor formed by the touch of human skin. Right, this is technology we’ve seen before in capacitive touchscreens and trackpads

The MH907 headphones will be available in colors of yellow, white or titan chrome. It is about 164cm (64.57 inches) long, weighs about 25g (0.88 oz) and will be available this week for €39. The headphones will be compatible with all phones that have a Fast Port connector.

Ubuntu 10.04 Named ‘Lucid Lynx’

399px-Lynx_lynx2Ubuntu’s next 9.10 release is just around the corner with it’s final release due for late next month. The heat is building up and many people are gearing up to try the latest Alpha that was release last week. But before Karmic Koala comes out, the version that comes after that is already making news.

People at the Atlanta Linux Fest got the news first. Mark Shuttleworth announced that Ubuntu’s next version, 10.04, scheduled to be released in April 2010, will be named Lucid Lynx. The name for the next version is usually decided months before it’s release, and this happens mostly in conferences held amongst avid linux enthusiasts or through mailing lists, like it happened last time. Ubuntu names are typical of alliteration, in fact they follows a particular scheme of Adjective + Animal Name. It all started with Warty Warthog way back in 2004 and since then, we’ve had nine more releases with zany names.

Lucid Lynx will be a long term support release (LTS) with updates that will last for 5 years. So, organizations that still run Hardy Heron 8.04 (LTS) should consider upgrading to this updated version as it releases next year. The Omg Ubuntu Blog quite excitedly points out that Ubuntu 10.04 will ship with Gnome 3 as default, a newer X server and aim for an even faster boot time. The Kubuntu variant will also sport a newer KDE 4.4

So what do you say? Does Lucid Lynx’ delight you?

WordWeb: Quick Dictionary Lookup [Software]

A language can only be learnt through experience and practice, and honing a language as weird as English can be a devil of a job. In a language in which you can spend the last evening evening out a pile of dirtor in which a soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert, a language which is official in 53 countries, spoken by more than a billion people and has several families and styles, can no doubt be a hard nut to crack.

For a language which has far too many words, people often use a dictionary. Ok, that’s an underestimation. People always use dictionaries to lookup word definitions. Earlier, we had printed books and hand printed manuscripts, but today, even though we still have hard copy dictionaries, most people just use their computers to quickly look up words or type in queries in their iPhones for quick meanings.

WordWeb is one such desktop application, that you can install on your PCs and fire it up whenever you find a word that even your cat hasn’t heard of. A superstition has it, that cats have seven lives. So even in seven lives, if your cat hasn’t heard of pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, you should accept that your cat is dumb and dig in a dictionary to see what it means.

WordWeb is a comprehensive one-click English thesaurus and dictionary for Windows. It can be used to look up words from almost any program, showing definitions, synonyms and related words. It includes pronunciations and usage examples, and has helpful spelling and sounds-like links.

Looking up a word in WordWeb is a piece of cake. Either use the keyboard hotkeys to fire it up (CTRL+ALT+<modifier>) or click the right mouse button while the CTRL key is pressed down. WordWeb is available in two editions. A free edition which has 150,000 root words and 120,000 synonym sets and a pro edition which will cost you $19. The pro edition has 6000 more definitions and some extra features such as a editable word database and wildcard word search.

In all, WordWeb makes up for a amazing quick look up dictionary and thesaurus. Although the pro version has some extra features, the free edition will be more than enough for an average user’s unfathomable, arcane and deviant word needs.

Dropbox Updates Web Interface – New Bulk Controls Introduced

dropbox Dropbox, the amazing file syncing application that most people are a fan of, released an update to their web interface recently. With this new update, managing files on the web interface became a bit more easier and functional, making Dropbox even more awesome. The features that top the list are: An overhauled interface for the web and some nifty new features that make bulk handling of files even more easier.

Within the new chic interface, you can now select multiple files and folders and then perform bulk actions over them. Selected objects can be moved or copied to another folder or bound together in a zip file and downloaded. With large file bulk operations, you’ll also get a progress bar so you’ll know how much more is there to wait.

Other features include a search box to search your archive of files and gmail like keyboard shortcuts. Keyboard shortcuts would not be enabled by default and will have to be enabled from the Preferences dialog under Account Settings. They are very gmail-like indeed. We have j’ for next file and k’ for previous file, o’ for opening a folder and so on. After enabling this function from the preferences, you can go through the whole list of shortcuts by tapping shift+?on the keyboard.

Their development team seems to have taken care of mobile users, as a new mobile-optimized site has also been brought up along with the normal upgrade. As for iPhone users, the official Dropbox application has already been submitted for approval in the Apple Store. Only time will tell when it gets approved it’s been 4 weeks already.

Anyhow, these updates just make us love Dropbox even more.

Wikify Automatically Adds Wikipedia Hyperlinks Into Text

Ever wanted to inject Wikipedia links into some lines of text? Found it tedious? Here comes Wikify that’ll let you inject Wikipedia links into text automagically.

Wikify is a web-service allowing everybody to enrich their arbitrary text with links to In other words, it makes hypertext from your plain text. You’ll need to put some text in the box provided and then hit the Start Wikify’ button. The tool will then go through your text and look for words that have corresponding Wikipedia pages. You can then copy the html code that has hyperlinks injected into it and then use them as you wish.

However, Wikify is not perfect. It will not come to know what you mean when a word has different meaning and variations. For instance, it will link to Internetand Explorerseparately when you wanted a link to Internet Explorer the browser.

But still, it should come in handy for those weird projects, where you might want to give Wikipedia some serious link love.
