Microsoft just announced the consumer preview of Office 2013/Office 365 (Download Office 2013 Consumer Preview) which includes a new metro interface and also several other interesting new features and changes which you can read about in our Office 2013 features post.
While Office 2013 is designed keeping Windows 8 and the new Metro UI, that Microsoft has been using for most of its products, in mind, it will also work on Windows 7 and Windows Vista. However, if you are someone like me, you might now like the Metro interface on Windows 7.
I was able to download the Office 2013 preview and use it for an hour or so. Office 2013 preview has Word 2013, PowerPoint 2013, Excel 2013, Outlook 2013, OneNote 2013, Access 2013 and Publisher 2013 included in the bundle. While not much has changed since the earlier announcement of Office 15, here is a screenshot tour of the new Office 2013.
New Splash Screens
All Office 2013 products sport a new splash screen which goes follows the standards of the Metro UI.
Steve Ballmer is currently announcing the Office 2013 consumer preview live, however, the links to download the consumer preview of Office 2013 links are already available online.
Office 2013 will be customized heavily to work with Windows 8 but will also work on other Windows versions. Office 2013 will also be touch screen friendly and will provide you with features like pinch and zoom among others. Office 2013 will allow users to use a stylus to create content, take notes and access other features, while also allowing you to create hand-written emails.
Office 2013 will be included on ARM-based Windows 8 devices including Microsoft Surface. Additionally, Office 2013 will also tightly integrate with SkyDrive and save your documents in the cloud by default. It will also have social features and integrate with Yammer, which Microsoft recently purchased.
More features of Microsoft are available on this page. We will be doing a detailed review and analysis of today’s announcement as well as a feature description of Office 2013.
Microsoft has opened up the downloads for the consumer preview of Office 2013 and can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/en. Please note that you will have to sign in using your Hotmail account before you can download the consumer preview of Office 2013/Office 365 Home Preview.
Update: New Features in Office 2013
Microsoft will be making an announcement later today at 12PM Pacific/12ET about some new product(s). The announcement will be made by Steve Ballmer which would mean that Microsoft is bound to announce something major.
As rumors suggest, the announcement could be related to the newer version of Office; Office 15 which Microsoft has been working on for a while. Microsoft is also set to release Windows 8 to consumers later this year, so it makes sense that they would also release a refresh for Office along with the new OS.
Office 15 will sport the new Metro look which has become the signature for Microsoft products of late and will more likely than not be ported to every future Microsoft product.
If you are interested in watching Steve Ballmer’s announcement live, you can do so by visiting the live webcast at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/ which will be available in Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. You can start viewing the live stream at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/presskits/office/liveevent.aspx
We’ll be posting more news about the event as it happens. So stay tuned for future updates right here.
I am a big fan of the Batman franchise movies and have watched them the day they released. To be honest, I can’t wait to watch the latest in the series “Dark Knight Rises” on July 20. Dark Knight Rises is definitely going to break box office records all over the world. However, even before the movie has even released, there are several torrent websites which have been filled up with fake torrents for the Dark Knight Rises.
While you might get into trouble legally for downloading the content, there is a high chance that the torrents available on the internet are infected with viruses and spyware which might put your computer at risk.
Back in 2010, Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 1 was leaked on Torrent websites and was downloaded millions of times. That leak was potentially intentional because it left off a good part of the movie out of the torrent thus driving users back to the theatre to catch up the rest of the movie. There were also several instances of fake torrents which infected users who downloaded them. The Dark Knight Rises torrents are fake and targeted towards gullible users who will be infected with malware and spyware.
While downloading torrents in itself is not illegal, it is always advisable to check your copyright laws before you download anything to your computer. While there are several tools which help you to download torrents anonymously, you should also use services which will tell you whether a torrent is infected or not.
And last but not the least, go ahead and check out some Dark Knight Rises Posters and Billboard ads and enjoy the Dark Knight Rises in theatres this week. It is definitely going to be worth it.
Of late there have been several instances of big websites being hacked and usernames and passwords being leaked into the wild. The most recent cases being that of Yahoo, where 450K email passwords were hacked released on the internet and the popular Android forum Phandroid.
While it is annoying that you have to change your passwords for no fault of yours, it is definitely necessary to do it and save yourself from further compromise. If you are someone who wants to only change your password if your account was compromised, a previously mentioned service called “Should I Change My Password” will definitely come in handy.
Should I Change My Password will check your email address against a database of compromised email addresses and let you know if your email has been compromised. The service also provides a feature where they can alert you if your email gets compromised in future attacks.
Currently the service has a database of 11.78 million compromised email addresses stored in their database, so there is a good chance that you might find your email there.
If you find your email in their database, you might want to change your password immediately. As an advice, don’t use lousy passwords like these. It only takes a few minutes to create strong passwords. If you need help in creating them, check out how to easily create strong passwords or use tools to generate strong passwords.

As a very active internet user I end up creating accounts on several websites and usually forget about them. However, there are some accounts which I use on a frequent basis. In the past, there have been several times when I have completely shut down my account on a website and deleted all my account data from it.
Right now I can easily delete my Facebook account, Twitter account, Google account or Yahoo account as they provide users with simple options to do the same. But what about Skype?
Well, if you are looking to delete your Skype account, you are in for some surprise (or maybe I am late to the party thanks to Reddit). Skype does not explicitly allow you to delete your account, and I am not kidding. Skype has a support page which states so (emphasis mine):
Can I delete my Skype account?
It’s not possible to delete a Skype account or change a Skype Name after it has been created. However, you can remove all the personal information contained in your profile. This will ensure that other people cannot search for you in Skype by using personal information such as your full name, email or phone number (although they will still be able to search for your Skype Name).
So this technically means that unless you personally go in and remove all the personally identifying information from your Skype profile it won’t be destroyed.
While every service have a right to store user data, they also have an obligation to provide their users with an option to delete their accounts when they want. Why Skype does not allow users to delete their accounts is beyond me. After all, that information is the users and they should have rights to delete it even if it is linked to billing or otherwise.
So how do you delete a Skype account then? Well this might not work 100%, but there have been some instances where users have been able to delete their accounts by directly contacting Skype. You can also visit the same support page to find information to delete your personal information from Skype.
This is definitely annoying, hopefully Microsoft will drill some sense into them. Were you aware about Skype not allowing you to delete your account? Do you think that Skype should allow users to delete their accounts?
eBay is definitely a place where you can snag a good deal on anything and everything. In fact, people also list their countries on sale there (See: Greece for Sale on eBay, Iceland as well). However, looks like someone put their game collection on sale at eBay this time and it fetched a bomb of a price.
The sale listing, which went with the title “BIGGEST COLLECTION EVER? 22 SEGA / NINTENDO / PC ENGINE FULLSETS,FACTORY SEALED!”, managed to sell for 1 million Euros or approximately $1.23 million. All this for a set of 7000 games.
The buyer of the product is a proud owner of all the games ever released on the Nintendo home systems, Sega systems and NEC systems. The entire package consists of 22 sets consisting of game cartridges, GameCube sets and more. You’ll find descriptions of the products included here.
The game collection sale is not the most expensive item ever sold on eBay though, but would beat the $1.2 million Honus Wagner baseball card sold in 2000 yet not as expensive $140 million yacht sold in 2005 according to Yahoo. The buyer might also have to pony up some additional fees and a 1000 Euro shipping charge and can expect to see his booty in 6-9 business days.
While the games are definitely something worth keeping, but would you pay 1 million Euros for it? Is the person who bought it crazy or just a passionate collector of games? You let me know.
I have been using Facebook for the past few years now, and one thing I have noticed is that a relationship status change on Facebook generates a lot of likes and comments. While it is impossible to keep an eye on the relationship status of each and every friend of ours in real life, Facebook does provide a easier way to do it.

However, most of the times, you might not know what the relationship status of a friend is unless they update it or you look at their profile. If you have hundreds of friends, that could be a lot of work. Well that was until a new app came through.
RelationBook is a new Facebook app which will tell you “who’s in a relationship” and who is not by looking at your friends profiles. The app sorts out your friends into various relationship status Facebook allows a user to set, thus allowing you to browse their profiles by clicking on links on the left side. RelationBook also allows you to search for friends using their name and filter their profiles by their gender.
Overall, RelationBook is a nice app which allows you to find out your friends’ relationship. However, it could add some more features like telling you when someone changed their relationship recently.
Just a week after Twitter suffered a massive outage, Facebook seems to be suffering it’s own outage and is not accessible on the web. The problem seems to be happening only at http://www.facebook.com and not on mobile devices for now.
A couple of years ago, Facebook suffered two similar outages one of which was related to a new feature rollout and one was related to a programmatic error. It looks like the current outage is similar to the previous ones.
The current outage does not affect mobile versions of Facebook, so you can continue accessing and updating Facebook on your mobile devices. As a workaround you can access Facebook using http://m.facebook.com or http://iphone.facebook.com on your web browser.
We have reached out to Facebook for info on this outage and will update this post when we have more to share.
Update: This outage may be restricted to a few users as some users are still able to access Facebook web.
Google Analytics is definitely one of the best analytics service around and with the introduction of Realtime Analytics it definitely adds more value to web tracking. However, one of the problems I have usually faced is the lack of an official app for Android, Google’s own mobile operating system.
However, it looks like the wait is finally over, since Google has officially launched the Google Analytics app for Android which provides you with an option to view realtime analytics, daily unique visitors, daily goal conversions and critical alerts that affect your website.
While the app itself comes with only few charts, it allows you to add more charts including visitor and session charts, page tracking , event tracking, goals, AdWords tracking and more.
If you are someone who relies on analytics or wants to keep an eye on the go, the official Google Analytics app for Android is something you should definitely use.
I have been amazed with the app and the ease of use, however, I would still like a lot more in it. Nevertheless, the app is still useful and I am rating it a high 4/5. You can give the app a try by visiting the Google Play store at this URL.
