Uploaded.to Not Working? Blocked in US Because of Megaupload

This has been a very interesting last few days with the draconian piracy law of SOPA and PIPA being defeated in the U.S. Congress and Megaupload being shutdown by the U.S. Justice Department. In fact the Megaupload website was back online shortly on different servers as well.

In retaliation of the Megaupload shutdown, the famous group Anonymous also took down several websites in protest. However, it looks like the protest is now growing to another level.

According to reports from Torrent Freak, another file sharing website called Uploaded.to is now blocking users from U.S. and not allowing them to upload or download files from their service. This is definitely a big rebuttal from them and would likely make other services follow in their footsteps.

Uploaded.to Banned in U.S.

Currently, users who visit uploaded.to from United States are displayed a message similar to the one in the image above. It reads:

Not available

Our service is currently unavailable in your country. Sorry about that.

Uploaded.to has a traffic rank of 3075 in the United States according to Alexa and serves about 350K users from United States according to Compete. Though their stats are no where near what Megaupload had; which was the 13th most popular website in the world, it would definitely inconvenience U.S. users who have used it to store files on the website.

There is no official update from Uploaded.to about this blockage and whether it will remain permanent. In the meantime, if you have been affected by the Megaupload takedown or the Uploaded.to blockage, don’t forget to check out several alternatives to Megaupload to store files in the cloud and other ways to share files online.

Skype Easter Egg for Comic Sans Font

It is a well known fact that “Comic Sans” is the most hated font on the internet. In fact, there are several websites such as bancomicsans.com and more which show their hatred towards it. Why? Read here.

However, I haven’t seen any application or website as such dissing the use of the font. However, it looks like Skype has a hidden Easter egg which disses the usage of the Comic Sans font.

Skype Comic Sans Easter Egg

What’s the Easter Egg? Well, Skype gives users an option to change the font of the IM & SMS window through the “Options” menu. If you change the font to Comic Sans, it changes the smiley available in the message area to a frowning face.

Skype Smiley Face for Fonts

Changing the font back to anything else changes the smiley back smiling face. That is very sneaky Skype, guess they have a lot of Comic Sans haters in their programming department. What do you think? Do you hate Comic Sans too?

Megaupload Back Online With New Website?

The U.S. Anti-piracy law SOPA and PIPA may be off the table for now, however, it did deal a a major blow to the 13th most visited site on the internet – “Megaupload” in some way.

Yesterday, the Justice Department of US shutdown Megaupload; one of the most popular online file sharing website in the world. Along with the closure of the website, they also arrested 7 people in connection with piracy and other charges. The downside of this was that several users might have lost legitimate files hosted on their servers forever.

Megaupload New Website

However, it looks like Megaupload is now making its way back on the internetz in another form. A forum post on a website (via Giga OM) says that Megaupload is now back online through a new domain name called megavideo.biz. However, the domain does not work fully, but they do have a working IP which does say that the site is back and they are working on it to get back to earlier levels soon.

The message reads:

This is the NEW MEGAUPLOAD SITE! we are working to be back full again

Bookmark the site and share the new address in facebook and twitter!

A quick WhoIS of the IP address shows that the server is located in Amsterdam, Netherlands by the RIPE Network Coordination Center and not Sweden where File sharing is an official religion Smile. Ironically, the Megaupload operation was a international co-operation between United States and several other countries which included Netherlands, so there is no guarantee that the above IP address may stay up for a long time.

It is not clear whether the site owners have access to the uploaded files when the Feds seized the Megaupload domains and servers. However, it could be that the site owners might have kept backups of the files in other locations as well.

It would be interesting to see, if the site really comes back into operation and how they would allow users to download files which they have already uploaded.  If you have been a Megaupload user, don’t forget to check out several alternatives to Megaupload to store files in the cloud and other ways to share files online.

5 Best HD Apps For Android

Android phones with HD screens are the latest rage nowadays in the tech world. The recently released Galaxy Nexus, HTC Rezound, and the LG Nitro HD all have screens of varying technology and size, they all have a whopping 720p HD screen resolution. While the Galaxy Nexus comes with a 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED screen, the Rezound comes with a 4.3-inch LCD screen and the Nitro HD comes with a 4.5-inch AH-IPS LCD.

The HD Super AMOLED screen used on the Galaxy Nexus is one of the most popular screen technology in use today. However, the AH-IPS LCD used by LG on their Nitro handset is overall the best screen technology. In fact, it was (the screen) even awarded the best screen technology of 2011 over the various Super-AMOLED variants.

What makes the True HD IPS display on the Nitro so amazing is that unlike the PenTile HD Super AMOLED screen used on the Galaxy Nexus, the Nitro’s screen has an RGB pixel arrangement which provides amazing color accuracy. The Nitro HD also bests the iPhone 4/4S Retina Display in terms of pixel count with a whopping pixel density of 329 pixels per inch. Another advantage of the AH-IPS LCD is that unlike AMOLED screens, it does not consume more power to display white content like websites with white backgrounds e.g. Facebook and Google Plus, which ultimately leads to a better battery life! No wonder that LG quotes that the Nitro has nearly 7 hours of talk time!

So if you own the next generation LG Nitro HD with a True HD IPS display, below are some apps which you must try so as to truly enjoy the beautiful screen on your handset :

5)   Beautiful Widgets Beautiful Widgets is the most popular widget available in the Android Market. As its name suggests, the app contains a set of beautiful widgets for your Android phone’s home screen. The app includes a beautiful set of widgets for clock, weather, and some toggles. The weather widget in particular looks gorgeous particularly on the HD screen of the Android phones. There are also some nice unlock animations which imitate the Sense 3.0 weather animation. In my opinion, Beautiful Widgets is the perfect app to make your iOS friends drool over your Android phone home screen.

Beautiful Widgets is also the first paid app in the Android Market to cross 1 Million+ downloads. Interested readers can purchase Beautiful Widgets from here.

4) Shadowgun Shadowgun is an F.P.S set in the future, where users need to play the role of John Slade, who is an infamous bounty hunter. The game has amazing console quality like graphics and also supports some dedicated USB Gamepads to make gaming easier. If you own an Android phone with a 720p HD screen resolution, Shadowgun will be the best game to make your friends and relatives go wow! over the game as well as the brilliant screen resolution of your phone.

If you are looking for some quality FPS shooting game for your Android handset, you MUST try out Shadowgun. The game is available for $4.99 in the Android Market.

3) Go Launcher Ex The Go developer team is pretty popular in the Android world, and is known for releasing some quality apps for free. Go Launcher Ex is one of them. While there are many other home screen replacement apps in the Android Market, none of them have as many features as Go Launcher, and neither are they updated regularly. Right from some wacky scrolling animations to some quality widgets to themes support, Go Launcher Ex has it all.

Go Launcher Ex is also perfect for all the new generation Android handsets with a 720p HD resolution display. Users can tweak Go Launcher Ex to increase the number of rows and columns on their home screen and take advantage of the extra screen estate offered by the HD screen on their phone. The best part is that Go Launcher Ex is free, which gives it a huge advantage over its paid competitors. Readers can download Go Launcher Ex from here.

2) Shine Runner Shine Runner comes from Vector Unit the developer of another beautiful game Riptide GP. Like Riptide GP, Shine Runner has some amazing water physics, eye popping visuals and much more. All the water effect in Shine Runner look absolutely stunning and real-life on an HD Android phone.

While the game is just a simple fanboat racing game, what makes it so much more fun is the totally destructible environment. Shine Runner can be purchased from the Android Market for $1.99.

1) Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation Modern Combat 3 was released just yesterday from Gameloft on the Android Market, and is one of the best FPS I have ever played on a mobile phone. The game has some stunning graphics and makes full use of the HD screen, the dual-core processor and the oodles of RAM found inside the current gen Android phones. The game has 13 single player campaigns, along with a multiplayer mode.

If you ever wanted to become a war hero, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation will definitely fulfill that wish of yours! The game can be downloaded from the Android Market for $6.99. Gameloft has released some other popular HD games for Android handsets as well. The LG Nitro HD comes pre-installed with the Gameloft HD store for quick access to these HD games.

Note-:  I was compensated and provided the LG Nitro HD Phone for this article, but all my opinions about the  phone and apps are my own.

Free Duplicate Image Finder and Remover

If you are someone like me, you might download a lot of images, music and video from the internet. However, over the course of time you might have downloaded tons of duplicates. In the past we have told you about several software which find duplicate files fast free and also allow you to find and delete duplicate files from your hard drive, however, lot of time has past since then and I had the changes to use another software specifically to find and delete duplicate images and pictures.

Find and Delete Duplicate Images

VisiPics is a simple duplicate image finder which works very well to find duplicate images. It allows you to scan through various folders and sub-folders to find duplicate images and delete them from a single interface. The best part is that it allows you to preview those images before you can actually delete them.

Once you have downloaded VisiPics you can launch it and select the folders you want to run duplicate checks on. Once you have selected the folders you can set the comparison filter for the images. There are three different filters available: Strict, Basic, Loose. Running the Loose filtering allows for greater comparison and a chance to find more duplicate images.

After you have changed the settings for finding duplicate images click on the play button and it will start scanning the folders and then running duplicate checks. The duplicate checks might take a while depending on how many images it has to compare and the type of filtering you chose.

Once the comparison is over VisiPics will show you the duplicate images in the left hand side container, you can hover over the images and see their preview and then mark the images by clicking on the image. Once you have scanned and marked the images which are duplicate you can either move them, rename them or delete them using the buttons in the right hand side container. You can continue browsing more duplicate images by clicking on the page links at the bottom of the left hand side container.

Overall, I have used VisiPics and have claimed over 1GB of space by deleting duplicate images, this is definitely a great software to compare and remove duplicate images from your hard drive.

Mute Video/Music Sound in Google Chrome

Tabbed browsing has definitely changed the way we access webpages in browsers. However, I have faced a few problems with multiple tabs, one of them being   a scenario where I have 20 tabs open in and one of them suddenly starts playing loud video or music.

Finding the offending tab is often like finding a needle in a haystack and the best recourse is to just mute your system music. But what if you are playing music on another app? You would mute that too right. Another solution would be to just close all the tabs at once and get rid of the annoyance. Neither of these solutions are really graceful.

There have been several forum threads about this issue, but Google engineers have stated that it is hard for them to isolate a tab which is playing music or video and allow users to mute them, thanks to limitations in the operating system.

However, there is an option in the form of a which will allow you to mute music or video sounds in all the tabs at once, using a toolbar option or a keyboard shortcut (Alt + W).

Mute All Tabs Google Chrome

The extension in question is the Chrome Toolbox Options, which also provides with several other interesting features to enhance your Google Chrome experience including preventing Google Chrome from closing down when you close the last tab and more.

The “Mute all tabs” is definitely a great feature, but what if you want to now find and close the tab which is playing the loud music or video? Are you going to go through each individual tab and find the culprit? Well, that would take a long time. Well, another extension called “Mute Tab” can come in handy.

Mute Tab is an   which will allow you to find out which tabs are playing videos, music or flash and then allow you to mute them. This is definitely handy if you want to find a culprit tab and shut it down rather than having to browse through individual tabs.

That’s it, using these two extensions will save you a lot of trouble, and probably embarrassment Winking smile when you are using Google Chrome. Do feel free to post your own suggestions if you use different methods to get rid of this annoyance.

Do a Barrel Roll Google Search Fun

Google is known for its impressive however, there are several other interesting features in Google search which are hidden as Eastern Eggs and sometimes not so hidden like the Google Pirate Edition.

Google Barrel Roll

A new treat can now be found on Google search when you search for the term "Do a barrel roll". When you perform this search at Google.com the search page will flip over and rotate just like a plane would do while it is doing a barrel roll.

According to Wikipedia:

A barrel roll is an aerial maneuver in which an airplane makes a complete rotation on its longitudinal axis while following a helical path, approximately maintaining its original direction. It is sometimes described as "a combination of a loop and a roll". The G-force is kept positive (but not constant) on the object throughout the maneuver, commonly between 2-3 G, and no less than 0.5 G.

So go ahead and to a barrel roll at Google by search for "Do a barrel roll" or just click on this link.

Bonus: Try searching for "tilt" and "askew" as well.

Thanks for the h/t @slate.

How To Get Back Old Gmail Theme

*See updates at bottom to find more ways to restore Gmail Interface

Google recently rolled out a new interface for   to all it’s users. The interface is in line with most of the design changes that have been brought about by Google. It all started when they decided to add a Bing link background to their homepage and continued with a slew of other changes including removing the I am feeling Luckybutton, using a new design for search results and yet more, simplifying the image search results, adding top references to results and more.

However, not many people are actually liking the design and unlike earlier the options to switch back to old Gmail have changed. If you have switched to the new Gmail theme, you can easily switch back to the older theme temporarily.

Revert Gmail Theme

To revert back to the Old Gmail look, click on the “Settings” icon and then select the option to “Revert to old look temporarily”.

Once you do that, Gmail will revert back to the old interface. I am not sure as to how long the older interface will be available before users are forced to switch to the new Gmail interface. However, as always someone might come up with user scripts or which will allow users to go back to the old Gmail interface.

We will update the post with user scripts and extensions to switch back to the old Google interface as we come across them.

Update: 04/20/2012: Check out a new way to restore Old Gmail Interface using a Stylish script.

Apps Crash After Installing iOS5

I have been using for over a week now and though the new features like instant access to camera from lock screen and the new notification center in iOS5 is worthwhile upgrading, I have been facing constant issues with apps crashing all the time. This even happens in the middle of a game, while reading an email or even using the App store app on the device or using Safari.

It looks like I am not the only person who is facing this issue since there are several threads out there which discuss the problem. Based on most of the threads I was able to fix the app crashing (fingers crossed). However, most of the solutions don’t work so you might have to continue trying different solutions till the apps stop crashing.

Here are some of the solutions you can try out if the apps on your device crash constantly after installing iOS5:

  • Close down all the apps running on your device and try opening up apps to see if they crash. If you are not sure how to check open apps, you can read a guide on multitasking in iOS
  • Download a free app on your device through the App store on your device. This method has known to fix the crashing for several users
  • Reboot your device.
  • Update your apps to the latest version
  • Turn of iCloud sync on the device

If none of the above solutions work for you, try to reinstall iOS5 on your device and then manually sync the apps to the device. Make sure to make a backup of the device before you restore it.

I will keep an eye for more solutions that should fix the app crashes after installing iOS5 and update this post. Please leave a comment if you continue to have problems or used another method to fix the app crashing problem in iOS5.
