iOS 5.1 Will Have Facebook Integration

A few months back Apple and had a problem over API access in iTunes Ping which led to Apple removing Facebook integration from Ping and then ditching them completely in favor of Twitter in iOS 5. However, it looks like the fight between Facebook and Apple might finally be over.

Last month we had reported that Facebook integration was spotted in iOS 5.1 Beta 3 and it looks like iOS 5.1 might actually have a deeper integration with the social networking website.

Facbeook iOS 5.1 Integration

Since the problems between Apple and Facebook arose, Facebook started displaying "via mobile" as the update method for their . However, it looks like few hours before the iPad 3/iPad HD event, Facebook has started to display the "via Facebook for iPhone" again.

Our editors Parth and Sathya tested out that updates sent from the / or iPad show the via as seen in the image above. I also tested the same for and continued seeing "via mobile".

So will iOS now have Facebook integration like it has for ? Well, our editors think that we should definitely see it during tomorrows announcement. We’ll keep you updated with more information if we come across it and keep you in the loop.

Friendsheet, Pinterest for Facebook Photos

Pinterest has been creating a lot of social media traction, specially among the female crowd. It has become one of the best ways to find interesting things that are pinned by users to an online pin board. Pinterest has also been one of the biggest social media stories aside from and in recent times.

Friendsheet, Pinterest for Facebook Photos

While interest in Pinterest is not dying down, a new service/Facebook app might change things a bit. A new service called Friendsheet allows you to browse your friends photos on Facebook in an interface which is similar to that of Pinterest.

The app asks users to login using Facebook and then asks for certain permissions before it can fetch all your friends photos. Once you have successfully logged in you will be able to browse all your friends photos. It displays all your friends photos in a neat interface (similar to Pinterest). You can then easily; like, share and comment on your friends photos from the same interface. It also provides with an option for endless scrolling where you can load new photos from your friends by scrolling to the bottom of the page.

Friendsheet touts itself as the best photo browser for Facebook and though it does not provide any other functionality other than browsing your friends photos, it definitely has a lot of scope to compete with Pinterest. Also, the fact that Mark Zuckerberg himself shared the service might ring a few bells among the Pinterest developers.

Dreamhost Down, Takes Down Millions of Websites With it

It looks like the popular shared hosting website Dreamhost is down and not working. Apparently, the outage is so huge that even the website Dreamhost.com and their admin panel at panel.dreamhost.com seems to be down.

Dreamhost hosts millions of websites on their server and this seems to have caused all of them to be inaccessible for now.

Additionally, several other sites which run on Dreamhost is down as well. We have an outage on our own cache servers too. There is no update from Dreamhost about this on their status website (http://status.dreamhost.com)

We have contacted Dreamhost to find out more about this outage and will update this post once we have more information.

Update: Dreamhost has posted updates saying that most of its customer accounts should be working fine. However, the web panel and dreamhost.com continues to remain inaccessible right now.

The story comes from the same fake website which also spread Keanu Reeves death earlier. While they don’t generally download virus/malware to your computer, they definitely are making money through the traffic and spreading false rumors. They are also using the opportunity to advertise a Ski resort. Earlier in December 2011, we had also reported the hoax spreading on Facebook about the death of International rock star legend Jon Bon Jovi.

The website in question is a satire website used to generate fake celebrity news. It also states that it is fake in its copyright notice:

FAKE… THIS STORY IS 100% FAKE! this is an entertainment website, and this is a totally fake article based on zero truth and is a complete work of fiction for entertainment purposes! this story was dynamically generated using a generic ‘template’ and is not factual. What Are Magnet Links? How Are They Different From Torrents?

So you heard about Magnet Links and were terrified? What Are Magnet Links? How Are They Different From Torrents? How to Download files using Magnet Links. Are Magnet Links Safe?

Magnet Links

In a world of peer-to-peer sharing, Torrents have come along a long way along. However, Torrents are being deemed as less safer these days because of people being able to easily track them. This has led several websites including "The Pirate Bay" from changing the way they allow users to download files.

The Pirate Bay recently switched from torrents to magnet links marking a big change in how it operates. In a nutshell, magnet links change how users download content. We’ll take a look at what has changed and what you will need to change in order to download files using Magnet links.

What are Magnet Links? What’s the Difference Between Magnet Links and Torrents?

Magnet Links change the fundamental way in which we download from peer-to-peer networks. Unlike Torrents, which needed a centralized server for tracking purposes, magnet links directly download content from other peers thus getting rid of the centralized server for tracking seeds and peers.

Magnet links make use of DHT, which is a form of decentralized distribution which allows a group of users to share a file faster amongst themselves without having to rely on a server. There is not much difference between how a file is downloaded from a torrent vs how it is downloaded from a magnet link.

Do I Have to Change How I Download Using Magnet Links?

No. Magnet links are similar to torrent files and if you have a P2P torrent software installed, you will be able to download the content using magnet links without having to change anything. However, you might have to upgrade your P2P software to the latest versions so that the browsers are aware that they should handle those links.

How to Download Files Using Magnet Links?

There are couple of ways in which you can download content using magnet links. The first is pretty straightforward. Just click on the link that is provided and it will launch your default torrent software as shown below. You might want to check the checkbox next to "Remember my choice for all links of this type" or "Always use this software to open such links" so that it will automatically open magnet links in your favorite torrent client.

Download Magnet Links

Clicking on the "Get This Torrent" link in Pirate Bay will automatically launch your Bittorrent application.

downloading_through_magnet_links

Once you open the magnet link, your torrent client will start downloading the content just like a regular torrent. Alternatively, you can also copy the magnet link and add it directly to your torrent client just like you used to do for regular torrents.

Are Magnet Links Safe?

Downloading through magnet links is as safe as downloading a torrent file. However, make sure to download legitimate content and you will be safe. There have been several cases of infected torrents so the files you download through magnet links could be unsafe as well.
