Yammer Grows Big After Microsoft’s Acquisition

Today, Microsoft has released some new Yammer statistics, which shows that the enterprise social network has surpassed 7 million registered users, which at the time of acquisition last year it had only 5 million registered users.

Microsoft also said that the sales for the year 2012 tripled to that of 2011, and highlighted that the fourth quarter sales in 2012 were up by four times than the previous year. Microsoft added that the number of paid registered users on Yammer shot up 165 percent in 2012, and has added nearly 290 new paying customers in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Yammer is one of the best tools for collaboration and widely used for private communication within organizations or a team. Microsoft has announced that it is going to integrate Yammer with Office this summer. That is, Microsoft’s SkyDrive Pro and Office Web Apps technologies will be tightly integrated into Yammer, and will be made available by summer 2013.


Starting next week, Microsoft will be making available Yammer/SharePoint products and services at new price points. Those offerings will be:

  • Yammer Basic Standalone: Free
  • Yammer Enterprise Standalone: $3 per user/per month
  • SharePoint Online (Plan 1) + Yammer Enterprise: $4 per user/per month
  • SharePoint Online (Plan 2) + Yammer Enterprise: $8 per user/per month
  • Office 365 E Plans 1-4 + Yammer Enterprise: $8 – $24 per user/per month

Facebook Testing Buy Tickets Button for Events

Facebook Event creators rely on third-party apps to enable the “Buy Tickets” option, however, it now looks like Facebook is planning to integrate it as a full-fledged feature on the site. The new “Buy Tickets” button will redirect users to the event site where the actual transactions take place.

Blink Vice President of Media Eti Suruzon noticed the new button added to one of his events, and has shared the following the screenshot: Facebook Events Buy Tickets Button Facebook is currently testing the new “Buy Tickets” button and is available to a random set of events. If the test is successful enough, the button will be made available for event creators to promote and generate ticket sales for their respective events.

Twitter Updates Viewing Options For Photos, Videos and Related Tweets

Today, Twitter has rolled out several new updates on its site, including improved photos and videos management on the service’s web interface. The new media update makes it easier for users to view media files either from profile pages or in search results.

When a user is viewing a photo on Twitter’s web interface, users were only restricted to view the smaller size of the image. If they wanted to see the larger version they would have to view the photo from the source by clicking on it. However, the new update provides the ability to view photos right on the Twitter web interface, without having to leave the site and view it on the source web page. Users can now simply click a photo on a profile page or in search result listings to see the larger version of the media file.

Along with this, Twitter has enhanced the video viewing feature. With the latest update, videos will begin showing up in users’ media galleries. Twitter’s new Vine, along with YouTube, Vimeo, and other partners whose videos already appear in the expanded Tweets feature, will be featured alongside photos.

Yet another notable feature is the ability to view more replies on a tweet’s page, along with replies to replies. Prior to this update, any single tweet page would only contain the first few replies. However, starting today, users can simply keep scrolling down to see all replies. This feature is expected to drive more discussion on the social network.

Facebook Q4 Earnings Released, Mark Zuckerberg Calls Facebook a ‘Mobile Company’

Facebook has released its Q4 and full-year revenue for 2012 today, going beyond the predictions of analysts. The social media giant reported $1.585 billion in revenue for Q4, up by 40 percent year-over-year. Revenue from advertising was $1.33 billion (84% of total revenue), up by 41% year-over-year.

Interestingly, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that Facebook is now a mobile company. “In 2012, we connected over a billion people and became a mobile company. We enter 2013 with good momentum and will continue to invest to achieve our mission and become a stronger, more valuable company.”

Facebook also reported that the monthly active users (MAUs) on the social network are now 1.06 billion as of December 31, 2012, an increase of 25 percent year-over-year. Daily active users (DAUs) on the other hand were 618 million on average for December 2012, an increase of 28% year-over-year.

Mobile MAUs were 680 million as of December 31, 2012, an increase of 57% year-over-year. Mobile DAUs exceeded web DAUs for the first time in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Zuckerberg is very much sure that mobile is where the money lies. He said that the company would focus more on providing better and ‘new mobile experiences’ for users. That being said, Facebook mobile ads are here to stay. “Mobile ads have done well. Ads in newsfeed barely affected level of engagement in Facebook. There’s a big opportunity for us here“, said the Facebook CEO.

Zuckerberg also hinted that it is very much required to go beyond conventional images and text in the ads. This is perhaps a hint for video ads coming to Facebook.

Kim Dotcom Confirms 250,000 Registered Users on Mega [Updated]

Update: Kim Dotcom who spoke at the launch of the service at his mansion in New Zealand revealed that his new site Mega has passed 1 million users.

A few hours ago Kim Dotcom launched his new encrypted cloud storage service MEGA in the U.S. offering 50GB of storage for free and three PRO tiers of 500GB to 4TB for $13-$40 a month.

Kim Dotcom confirmed that in less than one hour 100,000 users registered on the site, intimating it to be one of the fastest growing startups in the history of Internet. With such a huge response, MEGA servers are experiencing overload, while many users on Twitter are complaining that the site isn’t loading and are stuck at the registration page.

At the time of writing the post, Kim confirmed in another tweet that MEGA crossed 250,000 user registrations with server capacity in maximum load! According to is.up, the site currently appears to be down:

Facebook for Android Updated with Faster Photo Viewing and Voice Messaging

Facebook has released a new update for its Android app loaded with new features including faster viewing of photos, voice messaging, and improvised sharing of friends’ stories to Timelines, pages and groups.

The updated version is faster, however, it could vary depending on your device and the Android version you are running. Many users have been complaining that the app is slow and laggy. Well, you should blame your device for that, and it’s time you upgrade your device.

The new version has an expanded Share button. That is, you can not only share stories on your Timeline, but also share it on your friends’ Timelines, including Pages you have “liked,” and Groups you can participate in.

Google Doodle Celebrates London Underground 150th Anniversary

U.K. users received a pleasant surprise in the morning when they visited Google’s U.K. homepage. Today, the search giant is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the London Underground, the city’s subway transit system.

The famous Tube map was first designed by Harry Beck in 1931, and eventually introduced as the official public map in 1933. The doodle even uses the real names and colours of Underground lines.

The London Underground was opened to the public in 1863, with the first journey taking place between Paddington and Farringdon on the Metropolitan Railway, which now forms part of the Circle and District Line.

When it first opened, there were only seven stations. Today, the city’s subway transit system has 263 more stations. Nearly 1.17 billion passenger rides took place last year. According to the stats based on data from LU Performance Data Almanac, the Underground sees about 3.23 million daily riders, with 3.66 million on weekdays. Comparatively, the New York subway system delivered 1.64 billion rides in 2011.

The Tube’s anniversary is also being celebrated across the country today. The anniversary is being marked with a set of stamps, with London mayor Boris Johnson describing them as a ‘fitting celebration of London Underground’s rich heritage’.

Facebook Invites Media, “Come and See What We’re Building”

Facebook has sent out invitations to an event that is to be held on January 15, scheduled to start at 10pm Pacific Time. There are no specific details about why the press event is going to take place, but all we know for now is the tagline that says — Come and see what we’re building.

No, Facebook isn’t going to end on January 15, 2013. That’s a hoax message that is spreading on the social networking site. However, rumors have it that Facebook could be talking about anything from the speculative “Facebook phone,” the launch of new services, or just more clarification regarding the Instagram TOS changes.

The social networking giant — which as of October 2012 has over a billion active users — is testing out a new design for its Timelines. The new single-columned layout is currently rolled out for a few users in New Zealand. It is also implementing new Instagram-Facebook data sharing features that is scheduled to go into effect January 16, just a day following the January 15 media event.

Earlier in November 2012, it was revealed that an unknown HTC Android phone was spotted, with the codename OPERAUL. The phone had a 720p display and dual-core Snapdragon S4 SoC. However, we are not sure if Facebook is going to announce a phone during the press event.

In the last few weeks, Facebook has updated its iOS Facebook client with new emojis and sharing capabilities, the Nearby and Photo Sync features and the ability to install third-party apps without leaving the iOS client.


LinkedIn Reaches 200 Million User Milestone

In a blog post, LinkedIn announced that it had passed a new milestone of 200 million members on its site. The popular business-oriented social networking site was launched in 2003, and had reportedly passed the 100 million marks in 2011. LinkedIn has added more than 13 million members since its last announcement on November 1, 2012.

LinkedIn serves its members in 19 languages in 200 countries or territories. It has 74 million members in the U.S., while 64 percent of them are outside the U.S, including 11 million members in the U.K., 7 million in Canada, 18 million in India, and 11 million are based in Brazil. The site’s fastest growing countries are Turkey, Colombia and Indonesia. Approximately 2 members join LinkedIn every second. That’s, 172,800 registrations per day!
