10 Spooky Screensavers for Halloween

[Windows Only]

Would you like some creepy screensavers for Halloween? Most of these aren’t   scary, but they set the mood nicely and are perfectly safe for the little ghosts and goblins at home.

As many of you have learned by now, not all free screensavers are created equal. Many times, free means that you have to install stupid toolbars, adware and other unwanted junk along with the screensaver. That’s not true of the ones at NewFreeScreensavers.

One of the nice features of the screensavers above, is that they all now have settings to mute the sounds.

Some of the screensavers also have a setting to include a small analog clock on the screen. I think you’ll like that.

Review of Wise Registry Cleaner Free

[Windows Only]

wise-registry-cleaner-iconWould you pay good money for a program, if you could get some of the same features for free? How many ridiculous TV commercials have you seen for Double-My-Speed or My-Clean-PC? Both of those programs are from Cyberdefender, which many people claim is a scam.   One of the main components of these questionable programs, is a registry cleaner.

There are many free registry cleaning programs out there. The idea behind them is that they remove registry entries that are not needed, thereby speeding up the PC. I recently tried one named Wise Registry Cleaner Free.

Below, the first image shows the Wise cleaner in action. As you can see, the scanning can be adjusted to include or exclude several types of registry entries. Once the scanning is done, a click on the Fixbutton takes care of the cleanup.

This program is a free but limited version, and you’ll notice an upgrade button in the toolbar. However, it contains everything most other registry cleanup utilities have.

The most important feature any registry cleaner should have, is a way to backup the registry settings before making any permanent changes to the Windows registry. The Wise cleaner has very good backup features, easily found by hitting the second button in the toolbar. You can create a System Restore Point, or a full registry backup. I recommend doing both of these before doing any registry cleanup.

One additional feature is the registry defragmenter, which is initiated from the main toolbar. Once it’s running, it will analyzethe registry and then offer you a chance to defragment it. This supposedly helps Windows run a bit faster, since the registry is better organized after a defrag.

Wise Registry Cleaner Free is offered in a regular and a portable version.

Techie Buzz Verdict:

Some people claim that registry cleaners are a waste of time and possibly dangerous . I am still undecided as to how much good they do, but I’ve never had any bad mishaps using them. If your PC is running a bit slow, this cleaner may help speed things back up. I believe it’s very safe to use as long as you take advantage of the backup features.

Free Game – Secret Maryo Chronicles

Are you an old time gamer like me? I still remember playing the old platform games on Nintendo and Super Nintendo systems. I still like playing them now and then. However, I don’t need to get my old system out of the garage to play them. There are plenty of free games that look and feel just like the old ones.

One of my recent downloads is Secret Maryo Chronicles. As the name suggests, it’s very similar to the Super Mario games. I found the game at Penguspy, which is a good place to find great games for Linux, as well as Windows systems.

One good point in the game is that it’s available for Windows and Linux both. Now I’ve got something fun to do in Ubuntu 10.10.

Here’s a screenshot of the game.

I won’t go into details about how to play the game. You can figure out most of it by watching the video.

This game is perfect for old timers who miss Mario. It’s also a great game for younger people. Since it’s free, and available for Windows and Linux, I have no problem recommending it.

10 New Screensavers – Clocks and Gauges

[Windows Only]

As many of you have learned by now, not all free screensavers are created equal. Many times, free means that you have to install stupid toolbars, adware and other unwanted junk along with the screensaver. That’s not true of the ones at NewFreeScreensavers.com. Here are the most recent additions to the site.

These ten new screensavers seem to be mostly either clock themes, or some type of gauge. I was surprised to find that the gauge screensavers are uniquely designed clocks for displaying the time. The gauge on the left shows 24 hours. The gauge on the right shows 60 minutes. If you have the time, you can download one of these to help you keep the time.

Try Ubuntu Inside Windows – Uninstall If You Don’t Like It

wubi-installer-icon Do you want to try the newest operating system for PCs? Ubuntu 11.04 has recently been released. Although many people would enjoy trying it, the need to make permanent changes to their computers may be stopping them.

There is a way to install Ubuntu inside of Windows using the Wubi installer. If you decide you have no use for it, it can always be easily uninstalled later. Below, I’ll show you the details of a typical Wubi/Ubuntu installation.

First, you’ll need to download the correct Wubi file.

*** Download Wubi for Ubuntu 11.04

If the download goes well, you’ll have a wubi.exe file to run. When you launch it, you should see a setup screen like the one shown below. It should show the version at the top.

You can choose the Desktop Environmentusing the pull-down menu. In it you’ll get a choice of different versions of Ubuntu, such as Ubuntu (Desktop), Ubuntu Netbook, Kubuntu, Kubuntu Netbook, Xubuntu or Mythbuntu.

The rest of the settings are fairly obvious, but I was a bit confused when I entered my password and got an error. I didn’t notice that I had to enter the password twice.

Once you hit the Installbutton, you should see this next image. The download is fairly large. It took about 25 minutes on my DSL connection.

Once it finishes, you’ll be prompted to reboot.

Once the reboot has started, you will now have a new boot option in your Windows boot menu. Just select Ubuntu and it will finish installing. Here you can see a short video showing you basically what you’ll see as Ubuntu finishes up.

I won’t spend any time telling you how to customize Ubuntu once it’s finished installing. If you need help, there’s plenty of help available at Ubunutu forums.

When you return to Windows, you can find a new folder at C:\ubuntu, which contains the entire installation. This copy of Ubuntu can be uninstalled using the Add/Remove applet in Windows, or by launching the uninstall-wubi.exefile in the install folder as shown below.

Techie Buzz Verdict:

Wubi is a good solution for people who aren’t sure that they’ll like Ubuntu. If they decide they don’t like it, it’s easy to remove. A free operating system and an easy way to remove it are a winning combination in my opinion. Wubi with Ubuntu has my recommendation.

The other’s are each unique in their own ways and below, you can get a quick preview by watching this short video.

Installing Zone Alarm Free Firewall

Do you understand what a firewall really does? Most people would tell you that a firewall protects you from hackers out there on the internet. They’re right, but there’s a little more to it.

Every modern operating system has a firewall. Windows PCs are a special case, because they are specifically targeted by the dark forces out there. That’s mainly true because of the huge user base of Windows computers around the world.

Your firewall is meant to protect you from evil computers trying to access your computer without your knowledge (inbound protection). However, good firewalls also prevent your PC from broadcasting your private information or spreading worms, viruses and spam to other computers (outbound protection).

Many years ago, Windows shipped XP without any firewall protection turned on by default. That was a huge mistake and millions of people paid the price for it. The mistake was fixed by XP Service Pack 1, but many of us have never forgotten what happens when you don’t use a firewall.

zone-alarm-icon Back in the days of Windows 95 and 98, I used a firewall called ZoneAlarm, because Microsoft didn’t even offer one at the time. These days, the Windows firewall for XP, Vista and 7 is adequate, but it doesn’t offer very good outbound protection. That’s why it may be a good idea to try out the newest ZoneAlarm Free. Here’s what the folks at ZA say about their product.

Monitors inbound and outbound traffic flowing through your computer
Requests from an unknown or unsolicited source are identified and blocked
Hides your computer from hackers

Leverages real-time threat data from community of millions of ZoneAlarm users to detect and block the latest attacks
All programs launched on your computer are compared against a database of known programs; malicious program are blocked and safe programs allowed, rare unknown programs result in a warning
Delivers stronger, quieter security

Warns you of phishing sites and spyware distribution sites
Uses signatures and heuristics to identify more fraudulent websites than standard protection

Online Backup
Securely upload/download files with User-defined encryption keys.
Retrieve data from any location – login via any web browser to your account and access backed up data.
Automated backup schedules the backup of data per your convenience.

Below, I’ll run through a typical install of ZoneAlarm Free, with screenshots and tips to help you get through it.

Completely Repair Windows XP Without Losing Files

winFour years ago, when Windows XP was still king, and Vista was only a jester, I ran into an article by Fred Langa, which told me how to fix XP without losing personal files. I’ve been using this fix ever since to repair computers that have been crippled by spyware and trojans.

There’s one requirement that is a show stopper. You must have an official Windows XP installation CD. Sometimes computers either don’t come with one, or they come with a Restore CDfrom the manufacturer. The Restore CD may not work, or it may work differently.

If you don’t have an official Windows XP CD, you might be able to borrow one from a friend, but you’d better have the Product Key from your PC. It should be listed on a label which was placed somewhere on your computer. If you can’t find your Product Key, there are a few ways to recover the Key.

Another way to get an official CD is to buy one. A few years ago, I bought two copies of Windows XP from Ebay.com. Just be sure to get your copy from a trusted seller.

Assuming you have a valid Windows installation CD, here are the steps to fix Windows XP. This should be done only if you have no other options to fix it. There are no guarantees that it will always work.

1. Insert the Windows Install CD and reboot.
