Which is better: iPad or WePad?

Neofonie is a German company which is all set to introduce an Android powered tablet PC named as WePad. This new product from Neofonie is considered to be highly competitive with iPads.

The WePad tablet has an excellent processor in the form of Intel Atom N450 (featuring Intel GMA 3150 graphics, and 16GB of storage as standard, which is extendable up to 32GB. The display of WePad (11.6-inch 1366 x 768 touch screen) is bigger than that of iPad(9.7-inch 1024×768) which gives it a very stylish look. Moreover, the processing speed of WePad is1.66 GHz compared to iPad`s paltry 1.0 GHz. However, iPad holds an edge in terms of weight, battery life and memory.

Some specifications of WePad are-

  • 2 USB 2.0 port and 3-in-1 cardreader
  • Flash and java multimedia support
  • 1.3 megapixel webcam
  • UMTS modem
  • Battery life is up to 6 hours of browsing internet.

I definitely think that it is time to move to WePad. What about you?.Do not forget to tell us.

Android vs. Maemo

Touchscreen Smartphones have become massively popular since Apple introduced its iPhone.

In the last year or so, many touchscreen devices have come into the market. The growth of smartphones has led to development of better mobile operating systems.

Today, let’s compare two of the most powerful mobile OS: Android and Maemo .

Both Android and Maemo are Linux based operating systems but there is definitely a big difference between the two. Maemo   is a fully Debian based distro while Android is a solitary kernel with a few programs like Dalvik virtual machine and Sqlite database written on top of it.

Maemo`s ability to run largely-unmodified linux packages is the main difference compared to Android.

Maemo uses established desktop technology like X11 and GTK+ and is a lot easier to port existing applications. Some of the open-source apps, which are already ported to Maemo, include MPlayer, Pidgin, Gnumeric and Abiword. Android on the other hand runs applications in a Java-like virtual machine and hence the burden on authors is heavier, as they have to re-write the application from scratch.

For game developers, Maemo offers a common start-up and settings screen, and a framework called Osso-games-startup. This library has made the work of game developers a lot easier as they can now reduce the common start-up screen coding and concentrate more on game programming.

As far as strategic position is concerned, Android holds an edge over Maemo. The reason being, Nokia alone backs Maemo (featuring in four devices:   Nokia N770, N800, N810, N900 by the end of the year) , while Android is backed by  Google, Samsung, LG, Motorola, HTC, Acer and others (featuring in more than 18 devices). Maemo has a big disadvantage here. The best apps are going to be built for Android and iPhone because those will have the most users. However it seems that Maemo   is  more suitable for larger devices   like MIDs and netbooks.

The fate of Maemo may change drastically when Maemo imports Moblin OS next year. This new OS is to be called Meego and might very well change the future of Mobile computing.

How to Run Deb Files on Android

Android is one of the most powerful OS available today. We can even run debian applications on Android. To do so, ghostwalker at androidfanatic has made a custom Debian Shell for Android. The process is quite easy and it helps you to boot into a Debian shell which expands your reach to many new softwares. Just follow the steps below :

  • You need to download a modded firmware update if you are using G1. Get it here.
  • save the update.zip file on the SDcard
  • Boot into recovery mode (home+power) then press alt+s to apply changes
  • Download the installer for Debian Shell here.
  • unzip the file and copy the folder debian to SDcard’s root.
  • Go to /sdcard/debian through the terminal
  • Type su
  • Type chmod 4755 *
  • run the installer by typing installer.sh
  • Type bootdeb to mount and boot the debian system.

That’s it. This little mod is all it takes to run deb files on your Android.

Note: This mod does not in any way change your phone’s OS or harms it in any way.

Yahoo Launches New iPhone Search Applications

Yahoo has introduced two new mobile search apps. The first one is Yahoo Search iPhone app and the second one being,Sketch-a-search. Yahoo Search iPhone app is an integrated search service for the Apple iPhone including a number of interesting features like voice search and Shake to Clear(clears the last search when you shake the phone).

This fully featured search tool also provides information from Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Movies, and Yahoo News into the search results. The search application also takes advantage of location information and provides search results that are relevant to the user’s location. The Yahoo! Search for iPhone app is currently available in only 22 countries across North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, and is expected to cover the other parts as well.

The more interesting of the two apps is Sketch-a-search. The service works by allowing users to sketch a boundary on a map encompassing a specific location. This app will then, provide you with local information including restaurants and local businesses. It is really amazing because without even typing keywords, you get the search result.

The release of these new application shows that Yahoo has continued efforts to stay involved in the growing mobile industry. Well, we hope there is a lot more to come from Yahoo.

Nintendo 3DS Announced

NintendoNintendo plans to launch a new model of its DS hand-held game console that allows users to play 3D games without using special glasses. It is set for release before March 2011 in Japan. This new hand-held seems to be much more innovative than that bigger-screened Nintendo DSi XL.

Dont worry my friends,3DS will definitely be backward compatible with currrent DS and DSi games.

Earlier this year, it was discussed that there is a possibility of a motion sensor being part of a new Nintendo DS. However, it is still not clear whether 3DS will use a sensor with the ability to “read the movements of people playing.”This remains a rumour until the next meeting, which is scheduled on June 15, 2010 at Los Angeles. Another rumour suggested that NVIDIA’s Tegra processor would power a new DS hand-held.

It seems that Nintendo, a strong competitor of Sony and Microsoft, is trying its best to do a world of good in the market.

Virus Alert!! Merogo Worm is Searching for Symbians

Guys over at F-Secure labs have reported a new worm in the market – the Merogo SMS worm. This virus spreads through SMS and is named Trojan:SymbOS/MerogoSMS. It works only for s60 v3 devices and is completely incompatible with any other symbian device.

It deploys itself by sending an SMS to every contact in your phonebook. The receiver will see a long message in chinese with a link in it. If you click on that link, you’ll download the infected file and it will once again start sending messages. It also sends SMS to many premium numbers.

Traditionally, no one can install an unsigned app in an S60 device. This worm happens to be a signed app which contains many unsigned apps within it. It installs them when it is being installed itself.

F-Secure is trying very hard to contain this virus as no reports of attacks outside China have been observed. But even then, beware of any Chinese messages.

iPad is the next big iPhone??

People have asked – is iPad the next big iPhone? They might just as well be right. iPhone set a trend in today’s mobile community, something that no phone has beaten till date. iPad may just do the same with   the upcoming handheld market.

Apple is known mostly for it’s amazingly crafted UI and innovative ideas that make user experience a breeze. It has been proved time and again and might very well be the reason for it’s strong fan-base. Indeed, wall street journal has confirmed that Apple has already sold “hundreds of thousands” of iPads already, that too when the booking started last Friday. Things look bright enough for iPad.

WSJ also says:

..the company is still negotiating with media companies for a price cut on TV shows that people can download onto the device, said people familiar with the matter. Apple also hoped to work closely with newspaper, magazines and textbook publishers on new ways to digitally present print content on the iPad, but has for now put the effort on backburner in favor of focusing on other content, said one of those people.

Whatever might be in store for iPad, atleast one thing is more than clear – it sure is going to be a hit. We’ll keep you updated on further news about this.

Apple working on a new social app – iGroup

Apple logo

It seems that Apple is working on yet another social networking app. This one is called iGroup.

iGroup is meant for both iPhone and MobileMe. This app basically allows multiple users( a group of friends for example) to share thoughts if they’re attending a common event. It also allows users to check out the virtual positions of all of his friends in the event, though the details as to how this is achieved is not yet quite clear.

Once you’re in this app, you’ll be able to invite your friends to join a group and they’ll be able to see all the updates that you make.

Apple has also focused strongly on the security of this app. It uses a very intricate cryptographic key generation system which ensures complete security of all it’s functions.

All in all, it promises to be a great app and I think that Apple will make it a hit as it’s the fourth time Apple is going for social networking with it’s app.
