PayPal Incorrectly Limits Indian Accounts Over Different Name on PAN Issue, Here is How To Fix it

Since early 2011, PayPal has been a real nightmare for Indian users.

Rewinding: In order to comply with RBI guidelines, PayPal enforced two deadly rules for all Indian PayPal accounts. First, Indian users must empty entire PayPal funds to their bank accounts within 7 days of receiving a payment. Second and the worst of all, Indian users can never use funds in their PayPal account to buy goods, pay bills or even send the money to someone else. It is a one way street,   the ($) can check in any time she likes but she can not be transferred to a PayPal account of someone else’s. Unless you have a credit card linked to your PayPal account, Indian users can never send money, buy goods or pay for services.

In last couple of months, PayPal quietly rolled out auto withdrawal of Payments and waved off withdrawal fees for Indian users. This came as a surprise for many, since Indian users are not used to hear good news about PayPal’s changing policies and rules every now and then.

No sooner I realized that Okay, things have settled down, I can now peacefully go back to work, here he comes again.

A lot of Indian users are facing a typical problem of Invalid name on PAN, while the truth is that their names are actually same on both their PayPal accounts and PAN card. There is no way anyone can change their name on a PAN card which has already been registered with Govt of India, while on the other hand PayPal limits specific Indian accounts saying that Your PAN card is invalid.

The result is that until and unless a valid Pan number is added to a PayPal account, the user can not receive a payment. Makes no sense at all!

The Problem of Name Verification In PayPal and Indian PAN Card

Few days back, I logged into my Gmail account and was shocked to see an email from PayPal stating that my PayPal account has been limited from receiving payments.

My initial reaction was Wait, what? I have already added my PAN number in PayPal, along with my Bank details, home address and a purpose code for withdrawing payments. Everything was fine just the other day, what happened all of a sudden? I will first check my PayPal account and see whether everything is fine or not

When I logged into my PayPal account, I saw this big red notification Your PayPal account access is limited

For the sake of checking the receiving status of funds, I called up a friend who lives in U.S and asked him to send a small payment at my PayPal address.

My friend could not send the payment and PayPal showed him this message:

So here is my PAN card (which can be registered only once in a lifetime).

And here is what I see when I try to update my PAN on my PayPal account:

If you are going through a similar situation, let me assure you that it is not your fault. This is probably a glitch in PayPal’s PAN verification system and there is no possible way to get over this other than convince PayPal staff that your PAN is correct and no action is possible from your side.

Here are a couple of things I did, in order to remove the PayPal PAN restriction:

1. Follow @AskPayPal on Twitter and tweet your problem to him. This guy is faster than the tech support staff of PayPal and he will surely respond to your Tweet.

2. Take out your camera and click images of your PAN card, Bank pass book and your Indian citizenship voter card. This is important, as the photo on your Indian voter card and the photo on your PAN will prove that you are the same person.

3. Login to your PayPal account, click the Contact uslink and send PayPal an email describing your problem in full detail. Here is a sample email template

My PayPal account has been restricted from receiving Payments. The cause stated in your email [date] is that my PAN was found to be invalid. The truth however, is that my PAN is valid and my name is same on my Bank Pass book, PayPal account and my PAN card. There is no way I can change my name with any of these organizations.

I have checked my Information with the Income tax department website of India.

  • The name on my PAN card is [Your name]
  • The name on my PayPal account is [Your Name]
  • The name on my Bank Account is   [Your name]

I have attached five documents as email attachments, let me know if the photocopies or scanned copies of any of these documents needs to be shipped at a physical address.

A. The name as it appears on my PayPal account.
B. The Name as it appears on the income tax website.
C. The name as it appears on my Bank pass book and bank cheque book.
D. The name as it appears in my PAN card (Photo identification).
E. My Voter ID card which proves that I am an Indian citizen (photo identification).

Please let me know what should I do now.

4. Hold on for a day or two and you should hear from PayPal soon. In my case, they sent me an email stating that Your PayPal account has been restored.

Thank you Pallab.

Google Adsense Link Units Gets A Well Deserved Facelift

Link units from Google Adsense are an additional way to earn revenue from the smaller spaces and corners of your site. There are certain areas in your site’s HTML template where an ad unit might not fit, so you should use Adsense link units to utilize that space and monetize it accordingly.

The problem with Adsense link units is that for the desired conversion to happen, you need two clicks from the user. One click on the ad link unit and the final click on the resulting ad pages; which is why link units tend not to perform well, when compared with regular Adsense ads. Furthermore, Adsense link units sometimes have very low CPC which is one of the reasons why some webmasters prefer not to use Adsense link units at all.

There is some good news. Google has decided to revamp the design of Adsense link units by making the fonts and layouts slightly bigger. Furthermore, Google is reducing the number of topics in all link units to four for horizontal orientations and three for vertical orientations. This is self explanatory, as Adsense link units perform much better when you use the lesser topics format.

We’ve head feedback from publishers that it isn’t clear why they should choose to show four versus five terms in their link units. Most people pick one of these options by guessing the expected performance. We’ve actually found that link units with four terms almost always perform better than five, says Google.

Here is how the revised link units are supposed to look like

Additionally, the landing page for advertisements will also mimic the look and feel of a regular Google search result page. The Adchoices banner will stay, of course.

If you are using Adsense link units on your website, there is no need to create new units. The changes will be reflected automatically in a couple of weeks from now.

Improve The Performance Of Adsense Link Units on Your Website

If you use Google Adsense to monetize your website, you might know that link units do not perform as good as regular ad units does. But a proper placement and a few optimizations can produce very different results. Here are a few tips you might want to implement:

1. Less is more: According to Google Adsense program policies, every publisher is allowed to use up to 3 Adsense link units on the different pages of his website, along with the regular Adsense ad units and 2 Adsense for search box. From personal experiments, I have observed that when you clutter up your page with the maximum number of Adsense ads and link units, the performance of every unit is affected. All the advertisements contribute to the visual noise and the click through rates for each unit is reduced considerably.

For best results, I recommend using one link unit at a time and track which position and layout produces maximum revenue. Next, work out on a combination of two link units and check whether the total revenue is actually worth the visual clutter. Do not forget to track the regular ad units as well, because their performance might also be affected when you add 2 or 3 link units on your webpages.

2. Do not reuse colors: When you create a link unit from your Google Adsense account, remember to check off the option Reuse colors.

Most Adsense publishers ignore this option and keep the reuse colorsoption checked, which is a mistake. Why? Let’s say the background color of your Adsense link unit is grey while the link color is black, you have chosen this palette to ensure that the link unit completely blends with your website’s design. Fair enough, but when you keep the Reuse colorsoption checked, the same color combination is shown on Ad pages. When a user clicks one of the ad link units, he sees advertisements over a grey background and they are most likely to close the page right that instant.

When you uncheck the option reuse colors, the resulting ad pages will house the ads with blue links over a white background, which is by far one of the best color combinations for maximum click through rate.

3. Do not place Link units adjacent to each other:   I don’t understand why some webmasters place 2 or 3 vertical link units adjacent to each other, which never produces a good user or advertiser experience. You should place the link units on different areas of your site’s template, this ensures that each link unit gets the attention it deserves.

The link units on your site are not competitors and you should give each of them a fair chance to prove their worth.

4. Power of Site Navigation:   Leverage the power of your site’s navigation area and use a horizontal link unit at the top. This is one of those areas where a horizontal link unit fits fine, while a horizontal ad unit is too heavy for the space it demands. A proper placement of a horizontal link unit can work wonders.

5. 4 is greater than 5:   Use the 4 ad links format over the 5 ad links format, as the former has a higher click through rate and it feels good to the eyes. You can take my word on this, the 4 ad links format is usually better than its louder counterpart.

6. Never assume! Test and see what works for you: Never go blind over the advice and theories of fellow bloggers or webmasters. Seek lessons from experts but most importantly, learn from your experiments. Me saying that this works and that doesn’t, might be disastrous for your site.

Remember that every website is different and you will arrive to the best conclusion through rigorous testing and personal analysis.

Get Windows 8 User Interface And Themes In Windows 7 With Windows 8 UX Pack

The most interesting and highlighted feature of Windows 8 is its Metro user interface and the re-invented start menu. Windows 8, as you might know, has a refreshing multi pane start screen whose focus is to group applications and features into Metro style stacks. Rather than seeing the same old dull desktop, users can customize their start screen with the applications and features they love using. It is more of a tablet friendly interface on the top, while cloud computing features are buried within.

Fact is that Windows 8 developer preview was released for developers, so that they can develop and test their Metro style applications. As of this date, Windows 8 developer preview is not meant for general use and neither it is as stable as Windows 7 is.

If you don’t want to install Windows 8 but want to have a sneak peek on it’s UI features, try the Windows 8 UX pack for Windows7. The Windows 8 UX pack lets you preview Windows 8 visual styles, themes, wallpapers, fonts, colors and the Metro start screen, right within your existing Windows 7 installation. The visual elements will completely resemble the visual styles of Windows 8, it never hurts to give your desktop a refreshing feel once in a while.

This UX pack lets you choose either Windows 8 Aero glass or Windows 8 lite theme, the user tiles and wallpapers are automatically configured when you login. You can however, choose a different wallpaper or logon screen wallpaper but for best results, I would suggest you go with all the default options.

Here is how your Windows 7 system will look, once the Windows 8 UX pack is installed on your system:

This should not be confused with the system’s desktop, it is merely a launchpad where you can pin application shortcuts , folders or files. Similar to Windows 8 developer preview, the desktop can be accessed with the keyboard shortcut Win + E or by clicking the Desktopicon from the Windows 8 Start screen. Oops, I meant Windows 7 actually.

Here are a couple of more screenshots of my system running Windows 8 UX pack on Windows 7

The best thing regarding Windows 8 UX pack is that the program will never modify your system files and the old styles will return, the moment you uninstall it. Give this a try and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Chrome Remote Desktop Extension Lets You Remotely Control Any Desktop Or Share Yours

chrome-logoRemote desktop utilities are indispensable, if you often find yourself in a situation where you need immediate control of a remote computer. Maybe your mom is just beginning to learn how Windows 8 works and you don’t want to attend half a dozen phone calls in office, just to answer really basic questions. Or if your business client is not as tech savvy as you are, save yourself from the frustration of writing emailable tech support and do the stuff right from your own computer.

For a remote desktop connection to work, you need two things. An Always ONInternet connection and a remote desktop utility which will connect your computer with a remote computer via an authorization access code. There are quite a good number of remote desktop applications for Windows, Linux and MAC but most of them have the disadvantage of not supporting all platforms and operating systems. You want a single application which can provide remote support on any operating system – be that Linux, MAC or a primitive Windows computer. At the same time, you don’t want the app to be messy and bundled with tons of settings and useless features. That’s because the person on the other side is most likely to be clueless about these options and he will ring you back to know Where should I click?

The Chrome remote desktop extension by Google changes all this.

Chrome remote desktop allows users to get access to another computer or share their own computer with anyone else, using a secured one time authentication code. You can use the extension to provide tech support to anyone who is using Google Chrome or a Chromebook, and has the extension installed.

Here is how to get started with the Chrome remote desktop extension:

1. Install the extension, sign in with your Google account and grant extended access permissions to your computer by hitting the Continuebutton:

2. On the next page, hit Allow access

3. If you want to let your computer act as the host computer, click on Share this computer. This will launch the app in a new browser tab and you will be given a one time access verification code, as shown in the following screenshots:

To let your partner gain access to your computer, pass this one time 12 digit access verification code via email or IM (don’t tweet though). When your partner has access to your Chrome remote access code, he can click on Access a shared computer, enter the code and see your desktop in a new chrome tab on his computer.

As a remote user, you will be able to completely control the entire host computer from your remote desktop, and not just the browser where the remote desktop app is running. You can open up Windows start menu, create new files, browse through Windows explorer, install applications, delete files and folders, access the command prompt and perform any action on the remote computer. It works the same way as other remote desktop utilities work, the difference lies in the fact that this one works directly from your browser and requires one time installation only (if you are using Google Chrome sync that is).

Google says that the goal of this beta release is to demonstrate the core Chrome remote technology and get feedback from users. Additional use cases such as being able to access your own computer from another remote computer are coming soon.

Tweak Windows 8 Metro Start Screen With A Custom Background Image or Color

The default background color of Windows 8 logon screen is subtle green, which is pretty decent. However, most of us don’t like to see the same old background color or image on every other computer running Windows 8. You want your system to stand out from the crowd and one of the best ways to ensure this is to choose a custom background image for Windows 8 logon screen and set a custom image as Windows 8 Metro start screen background.

When you have installed Windows 8, your Metro start screen should look something like this

The above pixelated green background is cool but after using Windows 8 for a couple of weeks, you would surely want to change it to something you really love. Your family portrait, your beloved pet, your favorite sports team are some common examples.

To completely revamp your Windows 8 Metro screen background, try Windows 8 Start Tweaker. It’s a useful portable utility which can be used to change the background wallpaper of Windows 8 start screen and choose a custom color for Windows 8 logon screen as well.

All you have to do is extract the files from the package(122KB), run the program in administrator mode and browse to the location of the image file stored on your computer’s hard drive. (Note: the utility uses Chinese as default language, so Non-Chinese users will have to click the U.S flag option at the right bottom of the program window.)

When you are done choosing a custom background image for Windows 8 Metro background and a custom background color for Windows 8 logon screen, log off and log back in to see the changes.

Here is how I transformed the Metro start screen of my Windows 8 system. Cool right?

If you are not so comfortable with the Metro style UI, you can always disable the metro interface and switch back to the classic Windows 7 style start menu. Until and unless a stable version of Windows 8 is released, I would prefer sticking to Windows 7 for heavy duty work, while navigating all the new features of Windows 8 in my spare time.

For best results with the custom Metro background, make sure the height of the image is double the height of your screen resolution. This will ensure that the image fills the entire screen background, width of the background image is not a factor though.

Google’s Upcoming Circular Ad Formats Replicates Print Advertising On The Web

In the very beginning, there were only text ads. Blue links, ugly fonts, irregular font sizes lets catch the attention. That was 2001.

Then came rich media ads which are targeted to catch the attention of the user whose eyeballs are rolling like crazy. Video advertisements and Flash ads were incorporated because a particular type of audience engages with it, who on the other hand will completely ignore text advertisements.

According to some reports, Google is experimenting with new extra wide ad formats which will mimic the look and feel of newspaper circulars. You have probably seen those extra large ad blocks on deeper pages of a Sunday newspaper and Google calls this Probably the best ads are just answers. Google is in talks with advertisers such as Best Buy and Macy’s Inc; the newer circular ad format is most likely to be rolled out for a selected group of advertisers in coming weeks.

Here is how the new circular ads on Google will work. (Sorry, no screenshots yet as the circular ads are due to be revealed).

Instead of taking you to the landing page of the advertiser’s website, the circular advertisement will open up a menu, filled up with photos, videos, text and other multimedia content, as defined by the advertiser. The service will automatically craft the promotions based on factors such as query topics, recency of search query, location of search, search history amongst other factors. This is nothing but a more visually appealing system which shows relevant content to the user, depending upon his search query, location and other data Google has about him.

Lets take an example.

Suppose you are searching for Chinese restaurantsin Google and Google knows that you are quite interested in Food. So instead of showing you a plain text ad, Google might show you a circular ad which has more engaging content embedded within it. This can be the Google Maps location of a Chinese restaurant nearest to your location, a Places review from a Google Plus friend, a video of a famous Chinese dish or just plain text content. This depends on what filters have been specified by the advertiser and there is no way a user can control whether he sees just a plain text advertisement or a circular ad, which is still a work in progress.

After Google integrated the Plus one button with Adsense ads, their strategies have taken a steep turn. Ads are more social these days and instead of machine driven algorithms, Google is largely depending on human signals. The circular ads connects the dots.

This approach increases click- through rates from 15 percent to more than 50 percentsays Google.

And here is an example of a product ad, where the advertiser is bidding a high amount to buy the entire ad inventory and replace it with a video review of his product. A user can play the video directly from the advertisement and does not have to go the landing page of the advertiser. Clever!

When it comes to Internet advertising, Google has always ruled this game. From text ads to rich media, Google has just the right ad format for every advertiser who wants to drive targeted traffic to their landing pages. But don’t you think, a 50% click through rate is way too high. Imagine a scenario when 50% of your visitors click away from your site because of circular ads being displayed on the advertising space of your blog, monetized using Google Adsense. Then they have Panda Algorithmic updates which determines the quality of your site, remember?

Check out the following introductory video and head over to the new search ads page to learn more.

By the way, circular ads on Google has nothing to do with Google Plus circles. Actually, it’s good to know they are not considering pop ups or exit pop-ups.

Facebook Timeline: A Walkthrough Of Your Entire Life On Facebook

Okay Facebook just dropped their last bomb at the Facebook F8 developer summit after an overwhelming number of updates since yesterday . Facebook wants you to tell your story to the world from your personal timeline page, you can head over at to get started.

Facebook timeline is nothing but a visual representation of your life and the events surrounding it. It’s more of a controlled and customized page where you can organize the important stuff and create an online storybook, ready to be used as a reference in case a complete stranger stumbles on your Facebook profile. On your timeline page, you can share and highlight most memorable posts, photos, videos and events that are close to your heart. This is the landing page where people would discover the real person and his journey, described in his own words.

Here is how Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook timeline looks like:

It is a fact that users update a lot on their Facebook profile. From their breakfast menu to movie partners to a rainy day, everything is posted on Facebook. Not all of these updates are important and not all of these things deserve to be archived. Most of the updates are real time in nature but there are a few shares which should be archived and bookmarked for quick reference in the future.

Facebook timelines attempts to fill this gap by allowing you to customize your timeline page with events, posts, photos, videos, dates and status updates, which are kind of milestones rather than “just an update”. When you passed out of college, when you got engaged, when you received your first salary these are the things you would like to put on your Facebook timeline page rather than your random rants.

Timeline will help you summarize your stories on a single   pagesaid Zuckerberg. Rather than search your entire profile for a really old post, Timeline is the go to place for finding out important stories about a person. It’s the heart of your Facebook experience, completely rethought from the ground up,Zuckerberg adds.

Interestingly, Facebook did launched a story telling feature one year back which fell flat on its face. Back then, nobody used it because people don’t have the time to type their entire anniversary party and wait for friends to engage with it. However, this timeline feature looks really cool, all you have to do is organize your previous updates into a single page and control who can see your facebook timeline.

Here is an introductory video which walks you through Facebook timelines in brief detail:

In my opinion, this timeline feature is geared towards strangers who would want to be friends with you and want to know more about you as quickly as possible. People don’t have the time to visit your profile, scroll through all the updates and hit the Older postsbutton over and over again. Instead, they want a concise digest which tells who you are and what you have doing from the day you were born to this date.

On another note, this is the right time you clean up your Tagged photosalbum.

Fed Up Of Facebook’s Real Time News Ticker? Here is How To Remove it

The other day I logged into my Facebook account and was taken by a surprise.

Is this MySpace or Friendster? What have they done to the features and functionalities, it looks so complicated now, were some of my initial reactions.

Turns out I am not the only one complaining about the new features (read annoyances) Facebook rolled out recently. Everybody hates the new Facebook news feed and live ticker because this is nothing but a distraction. So are the automated friend lists, which adds little value as users are glued to the homepage and rarely check back the stream for each and every friend list Facebook created for them.

There is no way you can get the old Facebook layout back, Mark Zuckerberg’s team is already on steroids and they will be rolling out more updates in coming weeks. However, here are some easy ways to remove the Facebook real time news ticker and completely hide it from your Facebook profile, wall and news feed.

hide-facebook-news-tickerGoogle Chrome users should install this sweet Chrome extension which completely hides the news ticker in one stroke of genius. Hit the Installbutton and the news ticker is gone, forever. Works quite the same way you have hidden Facebook questions in past, another major Facebook annoyance.

Firefox users should install the remove Facebook sidebar ticker userscript along with the Greasemonkey add-on for Firefox. Save yourself from paying attention to the news ticker and gazing on it over and over again.

The problem with Facebook news ticker is that it is often filled up with junk updates which adds no value whatsoever. One of my friends has the habit of sharing tons of links over a short period of time and then he goes on liking his own link one by one.

Result: the news ticker is often populated with Mr X likes his own link. There is no way I can convince him to stop likinghis own link and neither I want to unfriend him (he sits next to me in office and I don’t want him to stare at me saying You deleted me on Facebook. How dare you?).

This is nothing but Facebook’s attempt to go super real time but they have forgotten the fact that this is not Twitter. This is Facebook and every system has some undocumented rules which demands a stay.   Time and again, Facebook developers impose features which are not at all justified and makes things complicated for the average user.

Dear Mark Zuckerberg : If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it. And stop breaking it over and over again and fix it to break it even further!

P.S: The only constant in this Universe is “Change”, and who knows it better than Mark and his team. No wonder  users will soon get used to whatever changes Facebook brings on and they will accept it going forward. You remember Google’s black navigation menu bar, don’t you?

Here Comes That Crazy Plus One Button Again

I knew this was long coming.

They captured the lower front in July and now the army is all set to march on. Starting October, Google will integrate the plus one button over Adsense advertisements and other display ads that are delivered from Google Display ad network.   The +1 button will begin to appear on AdSense for content and AdSense for mobile display ad formats, which includes image, animated gif and Flash ads.

Users will now be able to recommend or endorse advertisements to their social connections and Google is confident regarding the fact that this move will help both users and website owners.

Here is how the display advertisements will house the plus one button and people recommendations at the bottom:

Mr X, Miss Y and 200 other people have plus one’d this ad. So there must be something in here or why would they recommend this to YOU. Enough said!

Google says that plus one activity on advertisements is a really strong signal towards it’s relevancy. If John finds a particular ad very useful and he hits the Plus one button, John’s friends will see the recommendation on other websites and Google search results, provided they are searching for something similar.

But I am concerned over something else how will users use the plus one button on advertisements? Let’s take the example of a generaluser.

The user searches for cheap shoesand goes to a website from Google search results. He likes the content of the page but is attracted by the headline of an Adsense ad, placed above the fold. He clicks the ad and goes to the advertiser’s website. There he finds some more deals, signs up for an account, browses their store and performs other meaningful actions.

Now how is he going to plus one that ad which he thinks is very useful and his friends would love using it?

  • Is he going to remember the URL and landing page for the ad?
  • Is he going to hit the back button over and over again, come back to the publisher’s site and hit the plus one button?
  • Is he going to use the same search query again, go to the publishers website from search result page, find the ad and then plus one it?

The short answer to all of the above questions is NO. Web users have a short attention span, remember?

The other side of the coin is when people click the plus one button before clicking the advertisement. This defeats the sole purpose of the plus one button because if a user didn’t clicked the ad in the first place, how on earth can he recommend the target site to his friends? Of course, he can but then its useless for what it is intended for.

I am not sure how useful the user and advertiser experience will be after the plus one layer is spread over ads. In my opinion, this plus one thing has gone too far and it’s more like Attract the eyeballs.

The Ad Auction

The number of plus ones on a given advertisement will of course have an impact on the ad auction. If a given number of users hit the plus one button on an ad that’s served from Google display network, the same ad will have a higher chance of appearing on search result pages and other websites. This is true only when the host user is searching for something very similar and all the targeting conditions of the advertiser is met.

Result – some advertisers might experience a higher click through rate for specific keywords, which directly affects the ad auctions.

Google says

All eligible ads will continue to compete in the ad auction, and we’ll continue to show the ones that will generate the most revenue for you. +1 button clicks are not counted as clicks on ads. Although you won’t receive any revenue for +1 button clicks, +1’s will help AdSense to deliver more useful ads to your users, which we think will result in higher returns over time.

Opt Out Of Plus One Features And Social Annotations On Your Website

Thankfully, the social annotations feature is not forced and webmasters who would prefer not to use them over their Adsense ads, can completely opt out from ad annotations. Here are the steps:

1. Login to your Google Adsense account, switch to the new Adsense interface and click the Allow & block adstab.

2. Click Advanced settingson the left sidebar and choose Blockunder Social Ads Preference

From the webmasters perspective, I would rather choose Allowover Block. This is obvious I would first smell the water and check how the plus one activity affects my click through rate / revenue and then decide whether I should use the social annotations feature of Google Plus one button over Adsense ads used on my website.

If you are a Google Adsense publisher, my advice would be to first test and track both the scenarios and then arrive at a decision.

Remember – whenever your website makes money, Google makes money too. On top of that, they are testing these things on YOUR advertising space!

Facebook Will Soon Let You Auto Post Updates To Your Twitter Account

fb-iconSoon after Twitter introduced an official way to sync Tweets to your Facebook account, Facebook wants to return the favor.

The social site will soon let you auto-publish all your Facebook updates on Twitter, which includes status updates, photos, videos, events, notes and links that you have shared publicly on your Facebook profile. At this moment, Facebook allows users to sync updates from only applications and pages, but this feature will be extended to user profiles in coming weeks, as reported by BBC UK

This makes perfect sense, because Facebook is slowly expanding its reach by opening multiple flood gates, one at a time. Improved friend lists, the subscribe button, a dedicated messenger app, improved notifications different flowers of a garland. Interestingly, Facebook’s new subscriptionsystem works the same way as Twitter’s Followfeature does, where you can subscribeto anyone’s Facebook posts and read them, as long as the person in question allows subscriptions. Apparently, Facebook wants to extend their subscription system beyond Facebook, encouraging users to post their updates on Twitter, automatically.

To test it out, go to and you will be asked to chose the pages whom you want to link with a Twitter account of your choice. You will see this page only if you are the administrator of at least one Facebook page or have created a Facebook application with your Facebook account.

After you have linked your Facebook page with a Twitter account, you will be prompted to choose the updates which needs to be synced across both social sites.

Save the changes and you are done. The autopilot mode will take care of publishing the same update on your Twitter account.

While this is great news for social junkies, there is something both Facebook and Twitter have missed the ability to selectively send updates from one social site to another. I don’t want all my Facebook status updates posted over at my Twitter profile but I want only selected ones which makes sense. People don’t want to end up having an exact duplicate profile on every other social site and those who do it are either unfriended or hidden from the news feed.

As long as the synced updates are on a brand or business profile, it’s a fair practice. The moment you take auto-posting to a personal level it becomes nothing other than spam. People are already sick and tired of the same updates on every other social profile of yours and they want something human, which relates to them, not YOU.

I am just wondering why once upon a timerivals are shaking hands silently.   As they say When a common enemy (Google Plus) advances, smaller ones break walls and build bridges.
