Looks like Microsoft will never be able to have a smooth launch. After Windows 7 was launched, there were several forums which were filled with issues related to upgrading to Windows 7.
Several websites have covered issues ranging from continuous reboots to upgrades getting stuck at 62%.
If you are someone whose upgrade from Windows Vista is stuck at 62%, it is time to head to this Microsoft KB article for a fix. Here is the resolution, thanks to Microsoft and Lee Matthews from DSQ.
Important Do not use this resolution if the upgrade stops responding at a percentage other than 62% or if the log entries are not logged. For more information about how to open the Seupact.log file, see the More Information section.
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
- Restart the computer. Then, your computer will roll back to Windows Vista.
- Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables.
- Under System variables, click New.
- Type MIG_UPGRADE_IGNORE_PLUGINS in the Variable name field.
- Type IphlpsvcMigPlugin.dll in the Variable value field.
- Click OK three times to close the dialog boxes.
- Start the upgrade installation again.
Performing these steps should help you resolve the issues, if the Windows 7 upgrade is always stuck at 62%.
We have been reporting for the past week on the various giveaways for free antivirus from reputed companies like Panda and Kaspersky. Looks like only one of them is keeping true to their original deal.
We tested that you could download a free copy of Panda Internet Security 2010, however don’t expect to be able to download Kaspersky for FREE. The deal was a totally for Windows 7 Launch party attendees
dud and a dumb marketing idea. Only users who attended someone’s Windows 7 launch party can download a free copy. Duh.
Unless and until you have the email address of the host of some obscure party, you will not be able to download the so called FREE edition of Kaspersky.
And, if you think you can game the system and enter any email address as the host? Take a look at the above message, to see the end result. This is a definite piss off for several thousand users who have been anticipating to download the security software from Kaspersky.
Twitpic the popular image share service for twitter, seems to have silently endured a database crash or had a severe glitch in their system. While I was browsing pictures on Twitpic, I saw that all the image view counters have been reset to 1.
All of the images in my Twitpic account seems to have some glitch, most of the image counters have been reset.
There is no official mention about any problems on the Twitpic blog. We have contacted the Twitpic team to get more information about this issue. We are still awaiting information from them. We will update this post once we get a official confirmation.
Update: TwitPic responded back with the following response:
Hello, we are currently working on a new view counter for our website. In the process, you image views may have been temporarily reset to 0. We are working to restore the correct image count.
Thank you for your patience.
Have you checked your Twitpic account? Did your image view counter get reset? Do let us know about it.
There are times when you want to print a webpage or document and see a message like the one below even though you have all the printers and drivers installed.
Since the error says that there are no printers installed the most logical solution would be to check why it is giving you this error, so you head to the printers in control panel.
Most of the times you will see that the printers are missing from the available devices and when you try to install a printer you will see an error like the one below.
Case of the Missing Printers
As you can see from the error above the printers are missing due to the Print spooler service being disabled or stopped, you can restart your computer to get the printers back. But why waste time when you can do it without restarting the PC.
Here are the steps to get your missing printers back without having to restart the PC.
Step 1: Press Windows Key + R to open the run box and type in services.msc.
Step 2: The services window will open, in that find Print Spooler and start the service.
Once you have done that refresh or reopen the printer page from control panel and you will see that all your printers should reappear again.
While you are printing please try and save the environment use a add-in to print what you want or an excellent service that will allow you to save pages and inks by removing data and images you do not want to print. Happy Printing.
In a major embarrassment for Google, Gmail went down once again today and is still inaccessible to many users.
This is the second time in recent past that Gmail has gone down and does not really go down well with many users who rely on Gmail for both regular as well as custom domain related emails from Google Apps.
The Gmail blog has acknowledged the downtime and are working on it, however users accessing email using POP and IMAP should not be affected.
We will update you whenever we come across some more information about the downtime. In the meantime you can try one of the different Gmail modes to see if you can access your email.
I woke up this morning to check on the status of a torrent I was sharing with my friend and to my surprise I saw that the torrent was showing a red status icon.
I looked around to see if everything was ok, and yes everything including my internet connection was working fine.
On further research I checked the tracker and saw the problem, the OpenBittorrent tracker I was using for the torrent is showing as offline.
I tried loading the site but it seems to have some problems, there is no official word from OpenBittorrent yet. Have anyone of you been seeing similar issues with the OpenBittorrent tracker?
Will keep you updated with the further news as I come across it.
While researching something I came across a error I saw for the first time while visiting a site hosted on Google Pages, turns out that Google has bandwidth limits in place and enforce them if you go above a certain limit.
On further research I came across a topic on Google help which says this.
‘Exceeded bandwidth limit’ refers to how much traffic your site can get during a given time. While we do have a limit set on it, we can’t disclose the amount at this time. If you exceed the bandwidth limit on your site, please note that your site will come back as soon as your site’s traffic has fallen below our set amount.
So if you are planning to host a high traffic site on Google Pages go for a personal hosting plan instead.
Have you ever seen bandwidth limit messages for your sites hosted on Google Pages? How long does it take to get back to normal?
Early this morning two of the most popular social networking sites Twitter & Facebook along with Live Journal became victims of a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.
This by far crippled twitter and brought Facebook to a crawl with users of both these social networking sites facing severe difficulties while accessing them, however the attack is a serious cause of concern for both these sites and even others and needs to be investigated thoroughly.
Mashable is reporting that Google, Facebook & Twitter are working together to investigate the root cause of this attack.
Google being one of the most visited sites on the internet must have quite a bit of knowledge with dealing and thwarting such attacks, so their help would definitely help both these social networking sites to figure out the problem quickly.
Shows how even rivals can come together and fight against such atrocities being performed in such a huge way.
What is your say?
Twitter is down and the reason for it being stated as a Distributed Denial of Services (DDoS) attack according to the twitter status blog here and here.
Some parts of the site have been restored however the attack is still being continued and the site has been down for me here.
Many users are still not able to access the site, leave aside viewing the fail wahle
Could this be a backlash from spammers because twitter decided to ban malware links? Only time will tell, we will keep you updated with further status, in the meantime enjoy with your friends on Friendfeed, Facebook or Instant messengers.
Spammers just got a bit smarter and have started to use the subject line to post messages instead of using the email body.
Here is a spam message that came through our inbox and did not contain any body, but as you can see the entire message was added to the subject line.
Guess email providers would now have to update their spam checking filters and include the subject line too :-).
Have you been on the receiving end of such emails? You can report spam by clicking on the spam link or button provided by your email provider.
Spammers are everywhere, no matter how hard you try to avoid them they will coming after you in one way or the other.
The most favorable way of spammers/hackers to operate is to target something that is popular, for example Windows, Facebook or Twitter and compromise users in the end.
A new way of spam is spreading and twitter is the center of attraction once again, can’t help it can they. Like always we do spot spam, and here is how twitter spam is now affecting blogs.
Many blogs are now pulling in conversations from external sites using services such as Backtype, however many spammers are now aware of this trend and are manipulating the system by posting links about blogs and including a spam link along with it, here is a screenshot of the spam.
The problem with the above tweets is that, even though they are promoting genuine content, at the start of the tweet they are adding spam links which users may click first thinking that it is a link to the original content.
On the other hand, bloggers will approve such tweets and then have their own readers click on this link.
If you use a WordPress plugin such as Backtype, make sure to moderate each and every comment coming into your blog, every un-moderated comment may lead to spam links getting in to your blog.
So beware you have been advised of the advanced form of spammers looking to manipulate your blog.
Twitter is at it again, suspending authentic accounts that are not spam bots, just saw my timeline and saw a lot of my friends were suspended for now reason at all.
If you run a search for the word suspended on twitter you will see a lot of tweets that about suspended accounts.
This is the second time in a week that twitter has suspended authentic user accounts, the last occurrence was on Sunday 5th July 2009, for which twitter also wrote a blog post saying that they were restoring suspended accounts.
Twitter has been courting controversies for many reasons now, it is high time they got their act together, as doing something like this will definitely lose them loyal users.
If your account was suspended ask your friends to send a message with your handle to @twitter and @spam, this will help you get it restored soon.
Was your twitter account suspended?
The information provided earlier is not accurate and we have taken it down, we apologize to RevTwt for causing them inconvinience and wrongly writing this post.
Once again RevTwt is not a scam and it checks for advertising before allowing users to tweet about it.
Ok so we wrote sometime ago how twitter is turning into a spammers paradise, between back then and now, there have been lots of changes, no twitter have not gotten any smarter, they are still doing it manually, however the bots have definitely got much more smarter.
And here are really smart bots on twitter, who are out there to fool users into following them and then start spamming them.
Here are two followers who I saw following and surprise surprise, they both have two nice looking female display pictures and identical tweets.
Now when I visited their profiles, guess what, the both of them had identical tweets.
Looking at the tweets I was almost enticed to follow this user, however I do keep a eye on who I follow, this led me to discovering this new way of spamming twitter users.
One advice I would give users before following someone is to open up their profile page and take a look at what they tweet about, this may take you a minute, but it will definitely save you from a lot of spam hitting your timeline.
Orkut the popular social networking site in India and Brazil just rolled out new changes to their interface where they are now showing ads right on the top of the page.
This has irked quite a few users, who were used to seeing their friends list in that position.
However if you are Firefox user a simple Firefox add-on will solve your problems by removing the Orkut ads for you.
