Samsung Galaxy S Value Pack Firmware Leaks; Brings Face Unlock and More! (+ Installation Guide)

Over the last few weeks, there has been quite a huge controversy regarding the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Galaxy S. Originally, Samsung had stated that the Galaxy S and Tab won’t get the Ice Cream Sandwich update. However, due to the public outcry and negative media coverage, Sammy said that it is re-evaluating the ICS update for the handset. Later on, the company announced that it won’t be updating the Galaxy S to Ice Cream Sandwich due to the insufficient space on internal memory, but will instead release a ‘Value Pack’ for the phone which will add certain new features to the phone.The company later on announced that it won’t even be releasing a Value Pack update for the handset, thus dashing hopes of millions of Galaxy S owners.

However, last night, SamMobile leaked a new Android 2.3.6 based firmware for the Galaxy S, which suggests that the company is indeed working on a Value Pack update for the handset.

The leaked XXJVU firmware has quite a few new features. Below are the new features and changes which users have notices until now -:

  • Face Unlock
  • New Lockscreen
  • Video Editor from Galaxy S2
  • Increased I/O speeds
  • Gallery app loads faster
  • Web browser is much faster and smoother
  • Overall performance has also improved
  • Camera performance has improved
  • Auto-rotation is much faster

To flash the leaked XXJVU firmware on your Galaxy S, follow the steps mentioned below -:
Step 1: Download ODIN from here. Also make sure you have all the required drivers pre-installed, or simply install KIES on your PC.
Step 2: Extract all the firmware files from inside the ZIP file to a new folder on your Desktop. Now, fire up ODIN and then press the PDA button and select the ‘CODE_I9000XXJVU…tar.md5’ file. Then click the Modem button and select the ‘MODEM_I9000…tar.md5’ file and then the CSC button and select the ‘GT-I9000-CSC…tar.md5’ file.Step 3: Switch Off your Galaxy S and re-insert the battery. Put the phone into download mode by pressing the Volume Down + Home + Power button simultaneously. Once your phone boots into Download mode, connect it to your PC. When it gets detected, a random COM number will be displayed inside a glowing yellow box in ODIN.

Step 4: Now, simply press the ‘Start’ button and wait for ODIN to flash the firmware on your phone! Your phone will automatically reboot once the firmware is flashed.

Step 6 (Optional): To gain root access, users can download and flash Chainfire’s CF-Root kernel. Simply download the TAR file, and then click the PDA button in ODIN and then select the TAR file, and then just press the Start button. Your phone will automatically reboot after the rooted kernel is flashed.
