Earlier today, the folks over at Droid-Life got tipped that Motorola and Verizon will soon start rolling out the Android 4.0.4 (IMM76) ICS update for the Wi-Fi variant of the XOOM in the United States. The new version of Android includes quite a few minor but important changes, including a quicker screen rotation, a shortcut to lock the screen, better image quality for the camera and improved stability.
One of the recognized developers over at the XOOM sub-forum on XDA, solarnz, managed to get his hands on the OTA update, and has uploaded it for all other XOOM owners to flash and enjoy. Below are the steps to install the Android 4.0.4 IMM76 update on the Wi-Fi variant of the XOOM -:
P.S. – Your XOOM must be running on stock Ice Cream Sandwich, otherwise the update will not work. This OTA update package will only work on the Wi-Fi variant of the XOOM (wingray) in the United States.
Step 1: Download the Android 4.0.4 OTA update zip file from here, and transfer it to an external USB drive formatted in FAT32. Switch off your XOOM now, and connect the USB drive using a USB Host cable.
Step 2: Reboot your XOOM into Recovery mode, by either using adb or manually. To manually boot into recovery, switch it on. When the tablet displays the Dual Core boot screen logo, start pressing the Volume Down key repeatedly, until you see “Android Recovery” on the screen. Now, press the Volume Up button to boot into Recovery.
Step 3: Now simply select the ‘Install ZIP from USB drive’ option, and wait for the update to be flashed. If for any reason, the recovery does not detect any file, rename the OTA package to ‘update.zip’ and try again.
If your XOOM is running on stock Ice Cream Sandwich, but has been rooted with a custom recovery, you can try and simply flash the update via CWM. It might work, but don’t take my word for it!
