How To Manually Install The Official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Update On Nexus S
By on December 16th, 2011
Google has just started rolling out the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Nexus S and its numerous variants all over the world. The update is being rolled out in stages, and the OTA update can take some time (nearly a month!) to hit your phone.
If you cannot wait for that long, and want the official Ice Cream Sandwich update on your Nexus S right now, just follow the steps mentioned below -:
Before proceeding, keep in mind that you don’t need to have an unlocked bootloader or a rooted Nexus S to follow the steps mentioned below. However, if you are rooted and following the steps mentioned below, you will lose root access post the update.
Step 1) Owners of T-Mobile variant (I9020T) can download the official Ice Cream Sandwich update directly from Google’s server from here. I will update this post with the ICS download link for other handsets as soon as they are available.
Step 2) Transfer the downloaded file to your Nexus S internal memory. Now, reboot your handset into ‘Bootloader’ mode. Simply switch off the phone, re-insert the battery and then press the Volume up and Power button simultaneously to enter the Bootloader mode.
Step 3) Use the Volume button to highlight the ‘Recovery’ mode option, and select it by pressing the Power button. Your Nexus S will now show you a warning logo. Press the Power button and then the Volume Up button, to enter the Recovery mode from here.
Step 4) Using the volume keys, navigate to the “apply update from /sdcard” and select it by pressing the Power key. Now simply select the file you transferred to your Nexus S in Step 2, and wait for the update to be installed.
Once the update is installed, simply reboot your phone and you will be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on your Nexus S.
