Enable Megabass on Sony Ericsson Xperia and Other Android Handsets
By on November 15th, 2011

Before the advent of the iPhones and Android phones, dumb phones used to rule the market. Back then, Nokia used to be the market leader thanks to their Symbian S60 running handsets, while other manufacturers were selling handsets running either a Java based OS or some variant of Symbian.

Sony Ericsson used to sell their dumb phones under two different brands then – Cybershot and Walkman. The Cybershot brand was meant for people who wanted phones with absolutely stellar cameras, and the Walkman series was targeted towards audiophiles. Their Walkman series of phones came with a special equalizer preset known as MegaBass, which brought a noticeable improvement in bass, while playing back music.

However, since Sony Ericsson adopted Android as its primary handset OS, its Cybershot and Walkman series have died. The company now sells its Android phones under the Xperia brand, and none of them come with the MegaBass preset, which would please the audiophiles out there.

Now, one of the developers over at XDA has managed to develop a mod that enables MegaBass on the Xperia range of handsets from Sony Ericsson. The mod brings about a vast difference in the audio quality, and is highly recommended if you are an audiophile.

Keep in mind that you need to have a rooted Android handset with a custom recovery installed to flash this mod. Also, please use a decent pair of earphones, otherwise you won’t be able to notice the difference after installing this mod.

Below are the steps to enable MegaBass on your Sony Ericsson Xperia handset-:

Step 1: Download the MegaBass installer from here and transfer it to your phone.

Step 2: Now, simply reboot your phone in recovery mode and flash the zip file you transferred in Step 1.

Keep in mind that there is no way to toggle on/off this feature. After installing the MegaBass mod, simply plugin your headphones and listen to music from your favorite music player. Make sure that you have turned off the equalizer, to notice the difference in music quality.

If for some reason, you want to uninstall the MegaBass mod, download and flash this uninstaller in recovery mode.

The above mod is compatible with the following Xperia handsets – X8, X10, X10 Mini, X10 Mini Pro, Arc, Play, Neo, Mini, Mini Pro, Ray, Active and the Neo V.

This MegaBass mod should also work on other Android handsets. There is no harm in trying out this mod on your phone. So, if you try out this mod on your Android phone, drop in a comment and let us know if it makes a difference or not.
