When Will Your Phone Get The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Update?
By on November 1st, 2011

Google announced the much anticipated and awaited next major version of Android OS – Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, in an event co-hosted by Google and Samsung in Hong Kong. The new version of Android brings with it a new magazine like UI, Face Recognition unlock and much more. Readers can find out the Top 10 features in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich here.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be first available to the public via the Galaxy Nexus, which was announced on the same event. Soon after the Galaxy Nexus public availability, the Nexus S will also get an OTA update to Ice Cream Sandwich. However, there is still confusion as to which all handsets from HTC, Samsung, and Motorola will get the Android 4.0 update.

I have made a small chart below, consisting of most of the popular phones, that shows which all phones will get the Android 4.0 update, and when. And if not, why.

Samsung

Sammy, right now, is the biggest Android handset manufacturer. The company’s Galaxy S II has been setting the sales chart on fire, and is on track to become the highest selling Android phone of this year. Below is a small chart of which all Samsung phones will get the Android 4.0 update.

Reason

Galaxy S No Samsung has officially stopped software support for the Galaxy S.
Galaxy S II Yes (Q1 of 2012) This phone was made with ICS in mind. There is no way, it will not get the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update.
Galaxy Ace No Old and outdated internals.
Galaxy S L No Samsung does not really care much about this phone. It was launched to sell in huge numbers in developing markets like Asia, where people don’t care much about the Android OS version.
Nexus S Yes (Q4 of 2011) It’s a Nexus branded phone, and it’s only a year old. The Nexus S will get the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update soon after the Galaxy Nexus is available to the public.

All variants of the Galaxy S II will also get the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, but a few weeks (or months) after the European version gets it.

HTC

HTC was the biggest Android vendor in the U.S, in the recently ended Q3. The company has a decent track record of updating its handsets to the latest version on time. Below is a chart which shows which all HTC’s Droid phones will get the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update

Reason

Desire No Outdated Internals. Low Internal memory
Nexus One No Even though a Nexus phone, the N1 is just too old now to run Ice Cream Sandwich smoothly.
Incredible No Outdated hardware
Wildfire/Wildfire S/Legend No Too weak to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
EVO 4G No Old and outdated internals
Sensation/Sensation XE Yes (Q1 of 2012) Dual-core processor, ample amount of RAM. The Sensation will definitely get the Android 4.0 Update. The main question is, how much will the experience differ due to HTC’s Sense UI?
Desire HD/Incredible S/Desire S/Incredible 2 Doubtful Even though these phones are more than capable of running Ice Cream Sandwich, I am not really sure the phones will get the ICS update.

All other operator variants phones from HTC like the Radar 4G, Sensation 4G, Vivid etc. will also get the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, albeit late.

Motorola

Motorola handsets should hopefully get the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update pretty early, compared to other Andreoid handsets, since most of the Motorola phones share the same OMAP4 platform, as the Galaxy Nexus. This gives them a head-start, and makes it easier for them to port Ice Cream Sandwich to their phones.

Droid/Milestone/Droid X/Droid 2 No Old and outdated internals
Droid 3 Yes (Q2 of 2012) The Droid 3 should definitely get the Android 4.0 ICS update, after its other non-keyboard siblings get it.
Droid RAZR/Bionic/Atrix 2 Yes (Q1-Q2 of 2012) The handsets will get the Android 4.0 ICS update sometime in Q1-Q2 of 2012.

The Motorola XOOM – the first ever Honeycomb tablet – will also get the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, sometime next year.

Sony Ericsson

Looking at its software update track in 2011, I am pretty sure Sony Ericsson (Soon Sony) will update all its high-end Xperia handsets to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Reason

Xperia Play/Neo/Arc/Arc S Yes (Late Q1-Q2 of 2012) Sony will not make the same mistake it made last year with the X10. The company will definitely update its high-end Xperia handsets to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Please keep in mind that this is not an official list. It’s just based on what I think, keeping in mind the previous Android upgrade track of these companies.

Also, it might be possible that your handset may not officially get the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, even though it has adequate amount of horsepower. This is where the folks from CyanogenMod (CM) come to the rescue. They support more than 70 Android devices now, and if your phone has adequate power to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, be sure that it will get the next version of CM. The next version of CM – CM9 – will based on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. If your phone has a 1GHz processor, and 512MB of RAM, you can expect a Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update via custom ROM easily.
